How long to cancel Sky after install
I know that Sky normally sign you up to a 12 month contract but how long do
you have in which you can cancel the contract without being penalised?
The reason is that I am upgrading to SkyHD and if it is as bad as some
reports in various forums I want to be able to tell sky to take it back
without being locked into a 12 month contract.

You have, I believe, a one-month cancellation period for the Sky-HD
subscription itself.
What do you think may be "as bad as some reports"? Some HD-STBs have been
claimed to be noisey but mine has been almost silent for the 8 months or so
I have had it.. If upgrading through Sky just complain if it isn't perfect!

What bad reports?
Are they technical complaints or just disappointment at the few number of HD
channels?
If you don't watch Sky Sports or SKY movies then forget it. You've just
written off half the HD channels.
Those not paying for Sky Sport or Sky movies are better off waiting to get a
BBC Freesat HD system.

Or, even better, getting a Sky-HD STB with no HD-subscription (from, for
example, eBay or some retailers)! This gives everything Freesat will have and
the continuing option to upgrade to subscription HD at any time.

Assuming that they really really adore the BBC's single HD channel and
don't want to watch ANYTHING else at all.
Sky One, Discovery, National Geographic, History, Channel 4, etc, in
HD are still pretty decent, even if you don't have sports/movies.
