Channel4 HD!
Crumbs. Little old channel4 has beaten the BBC to having a HD version of a
main channel. The scaled SD MPEG4 HD transmission output is way better than
the normal SD MPEG2 channel scaled by either my TV or SKY HD box. The only
actual HD program today seems to be a film!

Is this channel FTA or FTV? In other words, do you still need a $ky card
to watch it?

regular channel 4 needs a card - and so does this.
interestingly it seems to be about a second behind channel 4 sd on
satellite - which is behind terrestrial analogue channel 4.

Yes, the only program today seems to be the late evening film. But as I
said the scaled SD broadcasts are better than the normal SD broadcast.

I think you should check channel4 to see if it's doesn't use Sky's
encryption and hence doesn't need a SKY card, even a freesat card.

That's normal. I know when Sky footy is on that a goal has been scored
because my neighbours chear their SKY SD broadcast, and then a goal is
scored a couple of seconds later on the HD broadcast.

Nice, certainly. A FTA, HD, film channel. Probably rather a lot to ask,
though :-(

The media companies like to milk every opportunity to get more "value" out
their product. So I bet a 16:9 HD broadcast copy is going to cost compared
to some letterbox 4:3 broadcast copy made 15 years ago.

i know it's early days but it's a little dissapointing that their prime time
shows are not in hd - i'm sure the channel launch isnt a spur of the moment
thing so you'd think they would have started making their new shows in HD a
year or so ago - i need my HD property ladder (!)

One wonders how much the BBC trustees decision to allow a formal HD service
to start was a factor. Whilst the BBC where dithering no one else was going
to commit. It's just typical of the BBC of having had the go ahead the start
of the service is delayed. I suppose they will say the funding isn't there
until the next financial year!

AIUI the BBC HD service was finally launched (as a public service) on Dec 1st ?
They're actually plugging it now on Beeb 1/2.

I watched, 2010 a space odyssey on TCM a while ago, the copy was in a
dreadful aspect ratio, that produced a thin band across my 55 inch tv, god
help people with 4:3, but that wasnt the worst of it, the quality was so
poor, it looked like it was broadcast from some excessively watched vhs
tape, and no tracking...

presumably it was non anamorphic and you didnt put your tv into zoom mode
then.
4:3 owners would have seen it in the correct aspect ratio.

So it's a high definition picture summarily ruined by the marketing cunts.

I doubt I'll bother then.

All I get still is BBC HD, which isn't a HD version of any channel in
particular and most of the day is still BBC HD Preview. When will we get BBC
1 HD? When will the rest follow? Or is BBC HD, as constituted now, it?

It's finally displaced BBC HD from the head of the HD Channel list. It's
easy to miss as you just assume BBC HD will be there. You might have missed
it watching all that lovely shop footage on the Luxe channel!

i'd sooner have a bbc hd channel that airs hd versions of shows from all bbc
channels as opposed to a simulcast.
i would however like it to run for 24hrs a day once sufficient material
exists.

That's OK if the BBC would keep us up to date. Why can't they say"...this SD
broadcast will be available in HD in two weeks time".
Since you don't know you always taking a gamble if you don't watch the SD
broadcast, and having done so I don't want to watch the unannounced HD
broadcasts weeks later.
Because of that I really only the watch programs which are announced on HD
and SD at the same time, such as Heroes.
