extra £1/month for the channel DAVE when it`s free on FREEview????? By
the way, good channel with little or no American trash!!

presumably because that is the choice of the channel.
if they wished to be unscrambled on satellite they could - nothing sky could
do to stop them.

Re: Why pay for Dave
What makes you think they are charging £1 for Dave?

I had a look at it for the first time last night. They were showing
old episodes of Never Mind the Buzzcocks all night, and I was hoping
for the one that had Lemmy stamp off in a huff.

They had a line of text across the top of the screen telling people
they were watching Never Mind the Buzzcocks, just in case anyone might
not have noticed the studio backdrop that said Never Mind the
Buzzcocks in almost every scene.

So for its obvious target market, I would say charging them £1 for a
free channel makes perfect sense. Its a lot less than they will spend
on premium rate phone numbers trying to influence the outcome of
pre-recorded programmes.

Re: Why pay for Dave
I've just had a look. Sky are not really charging £1 for "Dave" only.
What is happening is that there are six groups of channels making up
the basic Family Pack on Sky. If you are subscribing to any Sky
package at all, you can obviously see the channels that you are paying
for. If you hit upon a channel that is not in your chosen pack, the
message that you can get this channel for £1 more, will come up. If
you do pay £1 more, you will get that channel and all the others in
the same mix.

For example, if you have chosen the knowlege mix only, for £16 you
will get the Discoveries, National Geographics etc.

If you pay £1 more / month and take the "Variety" mix as well, you
will get Dave, Sky One, living, comedy, E4, bravo etc, etc.
If you land on any of the "Style" mix channels, again you will be
prompted to pay an extra £1 and that £1 would give you all of the
channels in that mix.

Re: Why pay for Dave
I think he is asking why SKY don't organise their channels so that the
channels which are "free" on Freeview aren't classed as part of any
Subscription Package. Sky could operate a bit like like TopUp TV on DVB-T.
SKY could say everyone gets Freesat channels for Free, saying what they are,
and then say what extra channels you can have if you buy one of SKY's
subscription packages.

I think they work they way they do to hide the fact how many channels would
be still be available if people cancelled Sky's subscription services and
went Freesat.

It's the channel operators who sign contracts with Sky. Dave, E4, The Hits
etc could be free if they wanted to be. When the contracts are up for
renewal, they could go free (or not).

That may be true, but they still don't make it clear which channels would
be available via Freesat, instead they "hide" them as part of some package.

Actually the make it *CRYSTAL* clear! Apart form ONE exception (Sky News)
ALL of the channels in Sky Mixes are encrypted and will NOT be on Freesat!
