Recording during trial promotions?
I'm a relatively new Sky+ customer, with a £17/month contract covering
just two 'categories' or channels or whatever they're called. A couple
of weeks ago I had a promotional leaflet giving me access to *all*
main channels for a week or so, until 1st Nov. Great!, I thought,
whether or not I do eventually decide to expand my channels, at least
I'll take advantage of this offer by recording a few good movies.

So I recorded maybe half a dozen from various channels, like 'The
Godfather', 'The Player', 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore', etc.

Around 31st October we started watching 'The Godfather'. It's long, so
we watched it again on 1st Nov and then switched on to watch the final
bit on 2nd Nov.

"Call xxx to subscribe to this channel." Inevitable, and I should
have expected it of course, but darned frustrating nevertheless! A
quick check confirmed all the others had suffered the same fate.

Out of curiosity, if I'd got around to buying my planned DVD recorder,
and recorded these with it, would *they* have been viewable?

---------

BTW, if I can be excused a change of topic, I was puzzled by the
subtitles in 'The Godfather'. (As explained in a separate post, I've
recently started switching these on quite often.) During the crucial
scene in the cafe when Michael Corleone met the villain (Sorazzo?) for
an important discussion, they spoke intensely for a minute or so in
Italian, with no subtitles. Other than 'THEY SPEAK ITALIAN' and 'THEY
CONTINUE SPEAKING ITALIAN'. Yet much other Italian conversation later
on *was* translated in the subtitles.

> Yeah, if you turn off a channel after recording to the hard drive the
program then becomes unavailable. Apparently you can keep the stored
items and watch them if you then get the channels turned on again, but
I don't know if that's the case with demo recordings like these.

A dvd recording would have been fine, you can record movies or
whatever to dvd, get the channels turned off or even remove SKY
completely and you would still be able to watch dvd recordings, or
recordings made to a dvd/Hard disc recorder and of course to VHS
recorder.

at that point. I have seen programs, Prison Break for instance where
the sky titles shut off when the program contains its own titles for
foreign speech.

Thanks Paul. I'll have to get around to researching my DVD recorder
purchase.

If you can afford it go for one with a hard drive too, it makes a heck
of a difference.

True as it stores the raw feed and only decodes when you come to watch it.
So you can record from any channel but you need to sub at the time of
playback.
