I keep getting nothing but automated response on the phone, is there a
number for sky tv through which I can acctually speak to a real person ?

01506 831781 works for "Customer Services" - and costs a lot less than
0870 2404040, particularly if your telephone tariff includes free calls
to geographical (01 & 02) numbers.
