ITV reception problem
ITV reception is getting to be a real problem, esp. now the Rugby World
Cup is on !
It's been like this ever since we installed - varies according to time
of day, and also depending on what you are recording and how you got to
channel 103 apparently (either with direct selection of 103, or by
scrolling up or down the channels). Best way to get a good picture is to
set the Sky+ box to record and then watch the recording with a slight
delay which then eventually catches up.
None of this seemed to work last night though, so in desperation I added
the ITV regional channels and amazingly several of them are perfect !
Problem then is that I don't have Sky+ functionality.
Questions:
1. Why don't Sky have all the ITV regions on alternate channels like
they do for BBC regions ? Are there any plans to have them ?
2. Can I setup 103 to be a regional ITV station ? My official postcode
says that I am in London, but I'd much prefer to watch Anglia anyway as
it's where I used to live and still like to see the local news, esp.
sports ?
TIA

That could indicate that your dish may be slightly misaligned.

The BBC pay a fortune to have all those (identical) channels listed in
the EPG - ITV pays only to have the local region listed, which is
cheaper and arguably better.

No, the station you get on 103 is the station that ITV instruct Sky to
make available to viewers in your postcode area. But as you've seen
you can tune in the other regions manually.

I did wonder about that - I don't think the local guy I used is that
precise, have to find someone else...

For them maybe, not for the consumer, because the channels are NOT
identical, e.g. in local news coverage. Anglia also had a very good
political programme that only it carried.

Agreed, but I lose Sky+ functionality.
Why can't Sky show me the regional channel *I* want to see on 103 ?
Would ITV complain or even care ???
Thanks for your reply and information...

Advertisers care when they target *your* area, and ITV needs all the
advertisers it can get.
When ITV1 was first added to Sky I lived in Surrey, about 8 miles SW of the
M25. We received London and Meridian (Newbury) on analogue, but were
allocated Meridian (Southampton) on Sky. It got slightly better as the
Thames Valley sub-region was later added, but I had fruitless debate with
ITV and Sky over having a more local ITV region.
I recall others reporting that originally Maidstone (where one Meridian
region actually had their studios) was allocated London ITV on Sky!

ITV care - but not in the sense you want them to!
They (ITV) provide Sky with Postcode->ITV Region data and Sky implement this.
As Sky have a contract (and are being paid!) to do this for ITV they won't
allow the customer to override ITVs instructions.

What, if any, region do you get on 993? I get Meridian (South) on 103
and London on 993.
(I also happen to be roughly equidistant from Hannington and Crystal
Palace for DTT.)

All areas outside of London get ITV London on 993. This is because the only
region to carry an Audio Description track is London's.
Similarly you'll also find C4 London on 994, and C4+1 London on 995.

Understandable I guess - do you think if I tell them where I really live
they'll make an exception ? :)
