[OT] Stargate SG-1 - "The Fourth Horseman, Part Two"
Episode aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in the United States on Friday,
January 6th, 2006 and on Sky One in the United Kingdom on Tuesday,
January 10th, 2006. This episode has not aired on UK, free to air
terrestial television and so all discussion of it must be preceeded by
spoiler space.
Plot Points
* A vaccine for the Ori plague has been created, created from antibodies
from sufferers unexpectedly cured by Gerak.
* Daniel and Mitchell were taken to the Sodan village where they were
welcomed. They expected to have to convince Lord Haikon and Jolan to
help them, but they had been recently sent by the Ori Prior to wipe out
a human civilisation that refused to follow the path of Origin. When
they arrived, they found a community of simple, unarmed farmers and left
them alone. They put their plan in to effect when the Prior arrived. He
used his abilities on Mitchell, nearly killing him before Daniel was
able to find the right frequency to disable his powers. With no control
over his abilities he was easily stopped with a single zat shot. While
he was unconcious, they took the blood sample they needed. However, it
proved to be a dead end. With Orlin's ability to retain his memories
failing rapidly he used another approach. He and Mitchell tried to
convince the Prior, who was originally named Damaris, to help them by
telling them the truth about the Ori, but he refused. He eventually
regained some control of his powers and attacked Mitchell, but he was
shot. Orlin interpreted the verses from the book of Origin he was
quoting - the Ori are coming to our galaxy to kill the Ancients.
* In the meantime, on Dakara, Teal'c was unable to convince enough of
the Jaffa council to turn on Gerak. Instead, he made a plan to take as
many ships as he could to Chulak and make his stand there, questioning
the will of Gerak's followers to kill fellow Jaffa. When Gerak arrived,
he agreed to meet Teal'c on the surface. They met at the site of Gerak's
father's grave. Gerak admits that he sought to preserve the lives of all
Jaffa and ensure that they would never be enslaved again, but Teal'c
disagrees and tells Gerak that he would rather die free than be a slave
to the Ori.
* On Earth, the plague spread rapidly, moving through North America,
Europe and beyond. General Landry was affected, also, but not before his
handling of the situation came under heavy criticism from the
international alliance. With no further ideas on how to cure the plague,
they were saved when Gerak arrived through the Stargate with Teal'c and
used his staff to cure those in the SGC's infirmary. As soon as he did
this, a mechanism designed to prevent such betrayal activated and
immolated Gerak. A cure was produced through antibodies taken from those
Gerak cured.
* Teal'c has strongly hinted that Bra'tac should be the man to lead the
Jaffa council now that Gerak is gone.
* Orlin has completely lost his memory and has been placed in care on
Earth with seemingly no way to restore his ascended status.
Stuff
* The Prior regained his abilities, despite the fact that the device
seemed to be functional. Perhaps this is some fault detection mechanism
built in to the staff ? However, the Prior was vulnerable to human and
Goa'uld weapons.
* Daniel says that the Ori are no match for the Ancients but they will
not act until much of the corporeal galaxy has suffered.
* Surely no cover story is not going to keep every single Doctor who
studied the plague quiet ? There will be conspiracy theories about this
for years. Such theories already surround the origins of such things as
AIDS and SARS.

He may not have regained full control over his abilities immediately, or
he may have found a way to slowly counteract the signal.

Are the Ori certain of that however or could the presence of Orlin have
introduced some doubt in their minds?

Would there however be any evidence to suggest that the virus was
extra-terrestrial in origin rather than an accident that arose from
research into biological weapons?

Or perhaps the device was just running out of power.
He certainly did not have full control of his abilities, otherwise he
would have gone for the staff, not Mitchell.

I don't know if the Ori really know what they're letting themselves in
for. I think Daniel's point was that the Ori will not be able to act in
our galaxy and certainly not challenge the Ancients until they have
enough followers here. They will continue to use the Priors to acheive
that, rather than acting directly, and the Ancients will not act until
the Ori themselves attack them. The damage will be done by then, as
human civilisations all over the galaxy will have either been converted
or destroyed.

I'm not sure. Viruses have DNA which could reveal any extra-terrestial
origin (at least from my "watches a lot of Sci-Fi" knowledge of the
subject), but I think they said that the Prior uses his own blood to
create the virus, and since the Prior is human this wouldn't be easy to
spot.

I'd have thought an analogue device would have been easier to tune in........
