Tom Baker was the best Doctor from 1974 to 1981. Tennant has been the best
Doctor since 2006.

Sorry - couldn't resist.

I don't think the two Doctors can be compared. They are both unique and
perfect for their time. Don't forget that Tom was pre-Star Wars so his
scripts were more quirky and more cerebral. David's were post-SW and so had
to live up to the expectations of modern science fiction fare. His scripts
had more action, less talk and better FX.

I love them both. And I loved Pertwee as well. Eccleston I liked but when
Tennant came on the scene, for me, the series suddenly found its center.

But I can never forget that here in the states, it was Tom Baker that
introduced me to the Doctor. He will always be special.

I curious because every week I torture myself and watch the new episode and
halfway through I'm throwing things at my set upset with the writing but
mostly upset because Jonas Armstrong is such a wimpy miscast Robin Hood.
Marion has bigger balls then he does.

Sorry, I'm halfway through this week's episode (it's a repeat) and I
thought instead of screaming and throwing things, I'd ask if anyone else

Tennant for me.

I never liked any of the original series. Didn't care for much of
the Eccleston run of the current series, and didn't care for him,
either (though I've always liked him in just about everything else
I've seen him in).

Even though I also disliked "The Christmas Invasion", I was
captivated by Tennant's performance. Even in the lesser episodes
of the last three seasons, I always like watching Tennant.

My wife has been a fan of The Doctor for the past 30 years. Far
and away her favorite of the Old School Doctors is Jon Pertwee.
But she says Tennant is a very close second. I suspect she
actually thinks Tennant is better, but likes Pertwee more because
he's "her" Doctor.

Both of us like Donna Noble the best of the latter-day companions.
We think Tate's been terrific in the role, and that she and
Tennant have a marvelous chemistry.

Tennant, but it's hard to make a meaningful comparison. Each was handed
very different writing to work with. I'm happy that the current version
is pitched at a slightly older audience than the original version was,
so that's going to color my reaction to the different Doctors.

Well, it seemed to be popular with the audience. It was regularly the
highest rated programme on a Saturday evening.

Whether it was well though of is a different matter. I found it to be very
derivative and so politically correct that it was almost unwatchable. Back
in the mid-80s, "Robin of Sherwood" introduced a Saracen character that had
never been in the legends. Since then, every single adaptation of the Robin
Hood legend has had a Saracen as one of the good guys. The modern "Robin
Hood" goes further in that the Saracen character is female and is more
educated and cultured than the westerners. The Saracens themselves are
always protrayed as peaceful people suffering unprovoked aggression from the
Crusaders. Robin is continually referring to the Crusade as "Pope Gregory's
war", implying that English forces have been sent to fight by a foreign
leader. It's all a not-very-subtle commentary on the situation in Iraq and
Afghanistan and bears no relation whatsoever to the political situation at
the time.

Even the Sheriff in the new series is a poor imitation of Alan Rickman's
portrayal in "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves".

But you have to bear in mind that critical acclaim isn't something that the
BBC seeks these days. All they want is ratings, which is why we get
interminable talent shows, celebrities skating, John Barrowman and Graham
Norton searching for nancies etc etc. No wonder "Robin Hood" is dumbed down.

I managed 5 episodes (well, four and a half) before I gave up in
disgust. It seems to do well enough in the ratings, but I suspect it's
mainly enjoyed by children - not that there's anything wrong with
that! The few adults I know who admit to watching it regard it as
a guilty pleasure.

Tom Baker was and is the best Doctor.
Tennant has been the ONLY Doctor since 2006!

When the heros strip down to boxers shorts, t shirts and army surplus
combat boots, and the local church has a clock, you figure it might
not be the most well reseached historical drama.

I do like Tennant, but I did enjoy Eccleston more because he was so off

I preferred the one in the blue suit last night. I thought he was much
better than the one in the brown suit.

No, hang on a minute, I've got that the wrong way round.

No, forget that, I was right the first time.

Not all the time surely ? The odd glass of champagne every now and then
perhaps, but nothing to excess :-)

Seriously Ecclestone brought a sort of dark brooding that was great. And
I don't think I'm just imagining it, but Billie always seemed happier
with him. There are a few occasions when she definitely gave Tennant
that "you arse" look.

Tom Baker blazed a decade-plus trail that other actors who would be The
Doctor follow--or not. Either way, he firmly imprinted on the Doctor mythos
by which informed how succeeding actors must reckon with. They must decide
how much alike or different to portray the role.

Plus Baker played the role when much of the definitive mythos about the
character was being created, not just a timelord, but one of many, a
Gallifreyan, who travelled not just in time, on Earth, but throughout space.
His Doctor truly got out to see the universe. Moreover he had not one, but
two of the definitive Companions: Sarah Jane and Leelah (who clearly
inspired her namesake on FUTURAMA)--and some would argue also for Romana.
And of course, the ultimate un-companion, K-9.

That said, I think David Tennant does a phenomenal job with the role, with
greater restrictions timewise (cue irony) given how it's an hour a week, vs
five 20-minute eps daily for a week, lesser restriction productionwise (the
BBC has more money and can create "better" fx to serve the story, as oppose
to some of the horror tales of budget restrictions as retold at conventions
from alumni of the show), yet far more competition: from the telly, the
internet and video games. Moreover Tennant had the misfortune of following
Christopher Eccleston (who was also great here in the States on HEROES as
the Invisible Man) who was fantastic as the Doctor for the 21st century (AD
Earth) and had the daunting task of reviving not only a role after a decade
or two, but a Franchise as big in England as Star Trek has been across the
pond.

Long story short, both actors had the roles in different times, in different
contexts, with different audiences. However I have to give nod to Baker:
--Baker set the stage that Tennant so admirably performs in
--Baker went first (while not a sole factor, credit must be given thus)
--Baker did so well at the role he lasted over a decade.

My thought has always been that if I could somehow audition all the guys
who've played the Doctor in the past 4.5 decades, Baker would be my first
choice. If the Doctor is supposed to be enigmatic and alouf, how can it NOT
be Baker?

Not quite. Although Tom Baker was the longest serving Doctor, he only
lasted for seven years. 1974 - 1981.

I cannot believe anyone whose watched the series back then would even
have a hard time with this. Tennants a great guy and a decent doctor
but unless you started watching Doctor Who with the new series I find
it baffling to put Tennant ahead of the guy who by far and large made
Doctor Who what it became. Whomever your favorite Doctor was. The
genius of Baker has to be acknowledged for making not only an amazing
Doctor but for bringing it really to the masses.

If you're going to compare an original with Tennant then the obvious
choice would be Davison not Baker.

You kidding. I tried to watch some old episodes, I fell asleep! TB was a great actor and a
wonderful Doctor, but those stories were so stupid, so badly constructed, so senseless,
that a self-respecting child would never enjoy them.

Hmmm...I *adore* the classic series ( well, 63-79ish anyway ) but I think
the new show is far more advanced in terms of relationships, characters and
plot development. Which makes it far more adult IMO.

It was Hartnell that brought the show to the masses...it was getting huge
viewing figures in it`s first couple of years. The show was pretty massive
during the Pertwee years as well.

Tom is my favourite Doctor - he was on when I started watching as a kid and
I think he was given some great scripts in his first few years ( which
always helps! ). It`s difficult to compare his performance with Tennat`s but
I think it`s fair to say Tennant has won the nation over with his portrayal
moreso than any other actor *since* Tom. He`ll always be the Doctor in the
publics eyes in the way Davison through to Eccleston probably won`t.

Even that's not quite right. He was the longest serving Doctor while it was
on air. Sylvester McCoy was officially the Doctor from 1987 to 1996.

It's really not that baffling at all. When Baker was the Doctor, all the old
fans said exactly the same - that you couldn't compare him to whoever was
the Doctor when they started watching.

Tennant is the Doctor now. And everyone who started watching Dr Who with him
in the role will think he's the best Doctor ever.

Tennant has brought Dr Who to the masses in exactly the same way Baker did
before him. Trying to compare the 2 of them, and say one is better than the
other, is an utterly pointless exercise.

Tom Baker was the Doctor from 1974. Are you seriously suggesting that anyone
