O/T - £1000 gas bills
Some people are spending a heck of a lot on gas. In the news today it
says bills will go up 60% to over £1000.
I live in a modest 3 bed semi, but my gas bill is £300 a year. Who
here is spending over £600 a year on gas, cos that's what you'll need
to be spending to make a 60% increase take your bill over £1k?

That would surprise me.
My Dell T7400 Workstation has a 1KW power supply. My Dell M1730 Laptop has a
230Watt power supply.
Ergo, I am pissing away 1.23 Kilo Watt Hours / per hour @ an approx 10 p per
unit = £2.95 per day = £1077 per year.
The thing about the oven, kettle, dish washer, and clothes washing machine
(which is used daily because I work out daily and hence need to launder my
sports clothes daily) is they are only used for short periods, and the
wretched PC is accumulating 24*7*52.

Ergo you're not. The power supply rating is the maximum it can sustain, not
the amount that actually whizzes through it constantly. It's like a speedo
that reads up to 150mph when actually all you do is potter down the shops.
Most of the day I imagine one or both of your computers will not be in
active use. If they go into stand-by mode, I doubt if they're using more
than 50 watts at most and probably significantly less.
Even when they are in use, it's hard to see them using more than a hundred
or two.

Yes, but it may well be using 3000 watts for the time it's on, especially
when it's heating the water. And your kettle, and your dishwasher, and your
tumble drier, and your cooker.

This is true partially, but neither PC is in standby. There are 5 spun up
hard drives, 1 Dual Core and 1 Quad Core CPU, 2 twin GPUs and three times
more memory than before.
I still think that it's a major part of my elec bill: I saw my monthly
consumption increase when I replaced the previous 2 PCs for these.
Another thing:
I used to be able to sit 2 PCs off my UPS. Now neither PC works on the UPS
without it tripping out.

Then you're beating yourself up wrongly. Either you have a faulty meter, or
you're using electricity for heating stuff. Heaters, cookers, washing
machines, kettles and dishwashers use far more than any PC.

Swich everything else off and check your meter reading then run only
the PC(s) for a while and then read the meter again .That should give
you a true figure if you give it long enough . The calculation you
gave above is surely wrong?

Or you could get hold of one of those 'Kill-a-Watt' meters to show
exactly how many watts are being consumed:
http://tinyurl.com/58hzp9
I've recently built a new PC specifically to minimize the power draw. It
has got a high efficiency (>85%) PSU, Core2 cpu (usually less than 10
watts) and a single 1T drive. Advantages are it runs silent (no fans,
except for psu) and is very quiet.

Yea yea I know, meant to say silent and very cool (no watts being
wasted). If you have a PC drawing a kilowatt, it is effectively an
exotic electric fan heater. Nice in the winter but a pest in the summer.

Silent AND very quiet! Wow!

My T7400 is quieter than its predecessor but its got about 5 different fans
inside and sounds like wind tunnel at full speed.
More fool me, but I insisted on RAID 0 having had a disk failure being the
main reason why I retired its predecessor.

Being made in China makes most fans exotic or were you thinking of exotic fan
dancers? :)

Because New Labour shelved a report in 1997 which stated one thing we
should do is build gas and oil storage. Bunsfield oil depot went up in
smoke a few years back, did it get rebuilt, no.. nothing replaced it.
Whilst Europe has the ability to store months of gas and oil, we have
about 2 weeks of storage. Europe can smooth out price fluctuations,
buying our cheap gas in the summer, and selling it back at idiot prices
because we have no storage. What a pathetic country and government this
is.

Neither of my two PCs make any noise, but my Mum's PC (also from Medion) and
bought a year after my oldest one, so is about 4 years old, sounds like an
aircraft hanger taking off.
I think it's the fan on the CPU but it's a non-standard diameter so I couldn't
find a replacement at the time and she's just lived with it as (a) it's not on
all the time and (b) it's not sat directly next to her head, so not at all
like mine.

One of the head bummers of the gas company (millionare) says that people who
are having problems with their gas bill should put on two jumpers!!!
I know what I would like to do with those jumpers!

Why would you even need planning permission to replace what was there?
It's not exactly a change of use?

They probably wouldn't if they're rebuilding *exactly* what was there
before, but I would guess any change in number or size of tanks etc
would need fresh permission.

None of my tablets make me feel cold, but then I'm mostly a warm-blooded
person.
Whenever I have a change in my medication I get a bit of hypertension, usually
because I'm taking some of it at a different time of day than I'm used to (eg.
I'm now up to 40mg - the maximum, from 30mg - of Lisinopril a day, so 20mg has
to be taken in the morning.
If hypertension kicks in, then during the first couple of hours at work it
feels like I'm tripping on something illegal. And then eating an orange around
2pm makes that feeling kick in again for another hour or so. I call those days
"good days" :)

Are these tanks likely to catch fire and blow up?
Or no no no no, goodness me no!

Nah the first one changed it's name to The Co-op The very first document on the
site is a handwritten letter begging for a new supermarket to break the Co-op's
monopoly. For some odd reason it is in gothic script and signed Fraulein Eva
Lidl-Braun-Cow ( not really). They are trying to set it up in the gap that has
been reserved in cars the railway is restored to it's old route. Years ago
Sainsbury's or Tescos request for planning permission for the same site
rejected.
I'll see if I can find the link to the documents. We could even add to them. Do
you know the only cinema in Pickering has recently closed for ever?

Awwwwwwwwwwwww:)
Apologies to anyone who has seen this before:
We used to live in Aviemore. One day we decided to go to the cinema because
The Full Monty was on. Just to let you know, this is a fairly small cinema
but even we
were surprised. We waited at the door and it was opened by a very pleasant
young man. He let us in and shot around to the paybox. We got our tickets
and wondered over to the sweetie counter. Yep, there he was:)
We got comfortable in our seats and muched our sweeties and waited for
someone else to arrived. No one arrived. We were alone!! We wondered if
we
might be offered our money back and asked to leave. But no! We had our own
private viewing:))) It seems that so long as there are people there, they
will show the film:))
Oh btw, the young man was the projectionist too:))

There's a cinema in Leiden with a bar at the back, if you order a beer it is
passed along the row to you. A certain amount of loud whispering is involved.
