American Idol hit by Writers' Strike!
Why aren't the unions here called something exciting like the
"International Brotherhood of Teamsters"?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/celebritynews/2304627/American-Idol-to-be-hit-by-writers-protest.html

The American Idol Truth Tour was launched in Los Angeles by the
Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and International Brotherhood of
Teamsters, the union for many crew members.

The unions accuse FremantleMedia, makers of American Idol as well as
other popular reality shows, of subjecting employees to "substandard
working conditions" and violating various employment laws by not
paying overtime or providing adequate meal and rest breaks.

They say FremantleMedia is earning millions from hit shows such as
American Idol, created by Simon Fuller and featuring fellow British
music mogul Simon Cowell, and are demanding it adopt "industry-
standard benefits" for employees including minimum pay as well as
health and pension benefits.

The campaign is being supported by a member of San Francisco's board
of supervisors, Bevan Dufty, who has introduced a resolution that
calls on FremantleMedia to provide employees with industry-standard
benefits and comply with state laws covering working hours and wages.

American Idol is due to start auditions for its eighth season in San
Francisco on Thursday with members of the WGAW expected to stage a
demonstration.

In April, workers on a number of FremantleMedia programmes filed
claims alleging the company owes them hundreds of thousands of dollars
in unpaid overtime.

The issue of alleged violations of employment laws in reality
television was highlighted by the guild during last winter's writers'
strike but not addressed in the final settlement the union reached
with Hollywood studios.
