OT: Sir Charles Wheeler dead.
Sir Charles Wheeler, veteran reporter from the BBC has died. He'd landed
with Marines at D - Day and covered all the major events of the 20th
century. He came across as a sincere reporter with integrity.
They don't make them like him any more.

Why is this OT?
Anyway, yes, top man, old school who had a go at the BBC for 'dumbing
down' or as those of us slightly to the other side of the PC radar
refer to it 'feminisation'.

he had real experience of war and understood it's nature rather than
some of the more pathetic reporting we get where it's obvious the
reporter think our troops should use magic bullets that only wound the
bad guys whilst the enemy can do as he wishes.

It's not off topic but you'll do your fucking best to make it so.

Yeah, it's a sad loss, but hopefully it will be a good excuse
for the news programmes to drag out that clip of when he was
with Jeremy Paxman watching the Berlin Wall being taken down.

Re: OT: Sir Charles Wheeler dead.
It must be grim getting up every day to reports of how everything you
supported and believed in is being revealed to be completely and
utterly useless and that those you most despise and disagree with are
the ones pointing it out to you.
Such is the joy of growing old surrounded by the tatters of failed
youthful idealism dont worry weve all been there.

I don't know. John Simpson's pretty good and has plenty of integrity,
if not exactly in the veteran league yet.. But when it comes to
journalists with any integrity, they're pretty thin on the ground
these days.

If only he was half as great as he thinks he is. I find him,
especially during the Afghanistan invasion years ago, a
self-aggrandising prick.
He's not in the same game as Wheeler, nevermind the same league.

I recall some rather bizzare footage of him striding into
Afghanistan dressed as a woman.....

Didn't realise that he was Boris Johnson's father-in-law, not that I'm very
good with that sort of thing. He was one of those quality people that
everyone remembers, and contributed to the vestigial feeling of goodwill
that many people my age have towards the BBC.

I know, that was why he recognized a ridiculous situation when he was
in one, hence his Monty Python comment.
