ITV1 - Tora Tora Tora
I see this was on this afternoon. It's been on loads of times on the ITV
digital channels along with Battle of Midway. Anyone know *how* many
times these two films have been shown this year? are ITV so clueless or
un bothered by this? Imagine all the films in their archive they have
the right to show?

Why do they do this?

Just be thankful that they showed "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and not "Pearl
Harbor".

But if they did would they show it once a week for six months? Why do
they do this with these two films?

I enjoyed it. It was well acted and scripted, and as far as I can tell
fairly historically accurate. Also, I can't think of any other film where
quite so much big stuff gets blown up, and it looks like they came pretty
close to blowing up some extras. Much better than CGI.

It was good the first time but they've shown it at least once a week on
ITV2/3/4 for the last 6 months - this is what I want to know, why??

I think they are quite interesting because you get to see a lot of aircraft
types that didn't actually take part in the battles. This is especially
true in "Midway", which uses a lot of footage of F6F Hellcats and F4U
Corsairs, which didn't enter service with the US Navy until more than a year
after the battle. The sequence where Charlton Heston crashes his SBD
Dauntless on the carrier rounddown is even worse, as his plane is an SB2C
Helldiver as it approaches the ship and an F9F Panther (a *jet* fighter from
the Korean war) as it explodes! I also have to wonder what German
Messerschmitts and Heinkels were dong in the middle of the Pacific!

For the same reason the bbc show the 'under siege' films every couple of
weeks .

However - what that reason is - is only known to the tv networks .

Were some of the carrier-crashes actual newsreel footage, dressed up and
colourised to fit in with the action?

IIRC, "The Battle Of Midway" used the same sequences.

OK I give in:)

I remember something that it wasn't Tor Tora Tora they radioed as they
didn't have speech radio but they had morse and the code for the attack
success was To Ra , repeated.

I suppose there is a deficit of footage - some good footage of B17's
though some of it was much later ones obviously crashing one wheel down
in the UK.

The sequence where Charlton Heston crashes his SBD
> Dauntless on the carrier rounddown is even worse, as his plane is an SB2C

Ahh *that* footage - IIRC I read that the F9F was prone to ruptured
on-board fuel tanks in heavy deck landings, already an overweight
underpowered plane further strengthening of undercarriage wasn't an
option. The early 50's gave rise to some superb ideas(well they looked
good!) in turboprop/jet hybrids to get round early poor jet engine
performance.

It's been ages since I saw it all the way through - is it repeated?

I'll have you know this was voted 'Aircraft Illustrated' all time
great thanks to the rather excellent flying scenes.

To be fair to the BBC, there must be ONE straight guy in the BBC that
likes Erika Eleniak's breasts he keeps showing the film.

Might have been but why show it *all* the time - this and Midway . Shown
endlessly - it's as though they think no one will notice.

Can't watch the one on the battleship for the knife fight at the end -
the cling clang of the knives is just silly

Because they *can* ! ;-)

They obviously see it as filler, but at least it is good filler.

Indeed they were, although they were not colourised. The producers (of
"Midway" especially) wanted to use period colour film, which explains the
inaccuracies where F6Fs and F4Us are concerned. There isn't much period
colour footage of F4Fs and F2As.

> IIRC, "The Battle Of Midway" used the same sequences.

"Midway" used footage from both "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Battle Of Britain".
