When you say "removes them" I assume you mean "replaces them with an
ever-changing and arguably even more distracting fuzzy area"

It depends which program you use. The DeLogo filter for VirtualDub when used
properly is much more sophisticated than that. It removed both logos from
Secret Diary of a Call Girl leaving just a feint green shadow in some dark
scenes where the ITV 2 logo used to be.

After: http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/1285614_vlcsnap127167.png.html
This was a first attempt using the fastest, simplest option available. An
expert can produce much better results.

on the image supplied, the "green shadow" is on a light area, and
plainly visible.
Also in my experience, logo-removers (including DeLogo) look fine in
stills (usually much better than the nigh-on useless example you
provided), but are shockingly distracting once the picture starts
moving, as the colours of the "shadow" move and change, as the algorithm
tries its best to predict what colours should be there.
The problem is that (short of hand colouring each and every frame) there
is no way to remove a logo satisfactorily, as there is no information
available on screen as to what colours are missing from underneath the
DOG.
