Since the plots will already be familiar to him after his
years in BtVS and Angel, perhaps he might find time to
earn a few shillings on the side coaching his co-stars in
the dark arts of television acting.

I have a feeling most of the original cast will be killed off in an
explosion at the start of the new series.

Or any sort of acting. Rumour has it that Patrick Stewart gave acting
masterclasses whilst on Star Trek TNG, and the standard of acting was much
higher at the end of the series :-)

The acting was certainly patchy on Torchwood, but I still think that script
development (absence of) was the major problem. I thought things would
improve after a rocky start, until I realised that they had put the best
scripts at the beginning!

I find American acting to be consistent, rather than particularly good or
inspired. I think it is a question of having technique rather than ability:
the girl who played the AprilBot was particularly convincing, and I always
thought it rather unnerving how good SMG was as the BuffyBot!

Speaking of which, what has happened to this new series? It was supposed to
have been recommissioned, with filming in the "spring" - now they are
talking about showing it in 2008.

Always?

12 December 2006: "Filming for the second series is due to start in Cardiff
next spring and the programmes will screen later in 2007."

So Bones isn't about to go into its 3rd season then?

That doesn't prove it's any good. I quite liked the pilot but there was
nothing about it that made me want to watch any further episodes.

I quite like Bones, actually. Not enough to go and buy the box set, but
enough to set the Sky+ box for it.

Pity. It's getting better and better.

And David is a huge part of that.

(Good grief. Where'd this spring up from?)

So what? It is a successful series in a cut throat market, therefore it
is "of note"

Commercially, perhaps, but critically?

I've not seen Bones but watched Alyson Hannigan's sitcom,
How I Met Your Mother, in its recent run in BBC2's much-prized
2am slot. It was pleasant enough but hardly groundbreaking.

I'm the proud (or should that be, literally, pathetic?) owner of
a shelf-full of books about BtVS: not the novels but the non-fiction
stuff by critics, fans and academics, and shall be buying some
more which are due to be published "real soon now". You couldn't
do that with Bones or How I Met Your Mother or 99% of programmes.

BtVS really was special, and I fear it has been downhill since then,
however much money Scooby Doo took at the box office.

But then you are defining "of note" as "really really special", which is
simply unsustainable. Like suggesting that Buffy should be judged to a
"higher standard", it sets an unwinnable goal.

Most of the BtVS cast have been in regular work in an industry with
permanent 75%+ unemployment.

What, by the way, "Has been downhill since then"?

On Bones, DB shares the lead credit with Emily Deschawotsit.

ED had the lead on Tru Calling and still has her lock-in with Fox that
will create Doll House (straight to seven eps, no pilot).

Hannigan expressed a clear desire to do a sitcom. Her own one didn't
work out, but she got next best - and regular work for a woman on the
wrong side of 30 in a sexist industry.

Gellar has hardly been out of work (and the Scoobies were made while
BtVS was still running), likewise Head.

According to IMDB Trachenberg has 4 projects on the go.

Seth Green has both Robot Chicken and Family Guy work (and *shudder* an
Italian Job sequel).

Yes, it does set the bar high but I hope not impossibly so, and that it is
just a question of time, otherwise judging post-BtVS output is reduced
simply to reading imdb.
