*The* whale.
While on n the 'bus, yesterday, I heard a vacuous Scottish bimbo on BBC
R5 describing the whale as being "distressed". She painted a vivid
picture of fleets of media helicopters and motorboats accomanying the
poor animal's panic-filled antics as it was hounded ed to its
inevitable demise.
"Eek!", she screamed. "The whale's just swum under our boat!"
I wish it had drowned the stupid bloody bitch.
Mick.

How come this whale got the top news item over the past few days when the
Japs and Norwegians harpoon them with impunity?

They harpoon them with impunity, while R5 just harps on about them
with impunity.
Yes, I realise chopsmcp did a better job in-pun-ity.

Yes - the phrase "out of its depth and endlessly spouting from its blowhole"
pretty much sums the doomed, bloated creature up.
Not a bad description of the whale, either.

Well, I can't say for sure, but it's probably due to the fact that
*IT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF LONDON*
<mick>
I'm amazed Radio North Lancashire bothered to cover it

This is more like it - I was beginning to rue the demise of the R5
newsgroup! Back on topic, I'll bet there's a lot of blubbering going on
now the poor old whale's passed away!

Re: *The* whale.
Rex, you should be shot ;-)
I *ove* bad puns!
Seriously, I was mildly interested in the story, but when I watched
News 24 and realised the Beeb had hired an expensive and incredibly
noisy helicopter, I knew things had gone way OTT.
In nature, thousands of animals die every day. When the Thames was so
filthy, thousands of Londoners died annually as a direct result.
We seem to have our prorities somewhat askew, IMHO.
Mick.
Shame they couldn't have reAHABilitated Moby though...

And you say I should be shot!
Seems to me the beeb were having a whale of a time at some poor mammals
expense (or, rather, the license fee payer's). I only say mammal as the
R5 pundit (if I recall correctly) referred to it as that, as if to get
the point across that she got CSE biology. Hopefully they'll all stop
harpooning on about it now they've got Sven's resignation / sacking to
concentrate on

That helicopter wasn't hired. The BBC bought it with money from the licence
fee.

You're kidding!
That means the Beeb must have at least three crews (two permanently on
stand-by) too!
Mick.
