No. Bannister has done a very good job IMO, since VD's absence. The
topics have generally been pretty sensible, and he knows how to field
the right questions on  guest interviews or talking to callers. Phil
(what football team do you support) Williams I'd put pretty much in
the same league as Bacon for naffness.

Well all five presenters are poor as far as I'm concerned and I'm
afraid Bannister is just as guilty in dealing with naff topics as the
others. It could be such a great slot but I think (presenters aside)
it's more to do with the policy of making it so interactive and 'it's
your BBC' that it becomes anondyne, childish and throwaway. I don't
want to know what Ted from Marlboroughs most embarrassing christmas
present was or why Sheila from Doncaster thinks that Steve Mclaren
should stand down.
I tend to podcast stuff now and be far more choosy about what i listen
too so I don't have to suffer Radio 5 as much. Even Mark Kermode's
film reviews are now getting too 'aren't we terribly great?' and
believing their own publicity. Ho hum

I agree that it's probably BBC policy to deliberately  dumb-down phone-
ins (at least as far as R5 is concerned). However from what I've heard
over the last few months,  the 'Ted's most embarassing Xmas present'
type of topic has rarely been  employed on Bannister's slot..I've
found his approach far more mature and quite listenable.

Mark Kermode has always been a fine example of someone with their head
firmly stuck up their own backside. He acts the same on BBC2's weekly
arts review. That's why Simon Mayo frequently takes the piss out of
him. But that's what makes that spot entertaining (for me aqnyway).

Well all five presenters are poor as far as I'm concerned and I'm
afraid Bannister is just as guilty in dealing with naff topics as the
others. It could be such a great slot but I think (presenters aside)
it's more to do with the policy of making it so interactive and 'it's
your BBC' that it becomes anondyne, childish and throwaway. I don't
want to know what Ted from Marlboroughs most embarrassing christmas
present was or why Sheila from Doncaster thinks that Steve Mclaren
should stand down.
I tend to podcast stuff now and be far more choosy about what i listen
too so I don't have to suffer Radio 5 as much. Even Mark Kermode's
film reviews are now getting too 'aren't we terribly great?' and
believing their own publicity. Ho hum

I agree that it's probably BBC policy to deliberately  dumb-down phone-
ins (at least as far as R5 is concerned). However from what I've heard
over the last few months,  the 'Ted's most embarassing Xmas present'
type of topic has rarely been  employed on Bannister's slot..I've
found his approach far more mature and quite listenable.

Mark Kermode has always been a fine example of someone with their head
firmly stuck up their own backside. He acts the same on BBC2's weekly
arts review. That's why Simon Mayo frequently takes the piss out of
him. But that's what makes that spot entertaining (for me aqnyway).
