Did anyone else hear Prince Charles on Today one day this week use the

I heard somehere that the plural of 'stadium' can either be stadiums
or stadia.
Something to do with the Latin ending of -ium. Bloody comprehensive
education.
Just my 2 penn'th.

From Using English.com: "The plural of status is not statuses or even stati.
Like salmon and sheep, the plural of status is simply status. However,
according to the Oxford English Dictionary these are pronounced differently:
the 'u' in the singular is as the 'u' in datum, whereas the plural has an 'u'
as in tune."

Yes, I thought it might be fifth declension when I saw the question.
(Latin that is; fifth [IIRR] nouns in Latin do end in -us for both the
singular and plural, but with different pronunciation, the plural indeed
being more like "oo s".)

yet is it not intolerably prissy to pretend words retain their foreign
characteristics once they are adopted into English? We talk about an opera
rather than insisting on an opus, we don't use the plural octopidi (sp?),
yet a few words get subjected to these torturous un-englishisms. I'm happy
to talk about statuses.

Do you get cover on the Civil List? I think the question arose about
the time of the Windsor Castle fire.
