Radio Plays
I often use 'Listen Again' to record the R4 afternoon plays into MP3
format for listening to at my leisure. There are also some good ones
on Radio 7

It seems that they can only be recorded in 'real time' so I was
wondering if anyone here knows of a [free?] source of MP3 radio plays.

Thanks

It is possible to download the Real Audio file direct from the BBC
website, although this is not advertised for obvious reasons.

The best way, IMHO, to do it is with a programme called Net Transport
(sometimes known as NetXfer). Start Net Transport and activate the URL
sniffer (this is the part of the program which detects the location of
the actual Real Audio file (beginning rtsp:// rather than http://).
You then start the programme in the Listen Again BBC Radio Player, and
almost immediately, Net Transport will display the rtsp link. Then you
just click on "Download" and away you go. Depending on your
connection speed, download times vary. My broadband connection
usually downloads a 60-minute programme in about 20-30 seconds. Net
Transport is available as a fully functioning free trial download,
after the trial period the cost is less than £20. You will be more
than happy to pay for it, as I was. The site for downloading Net
Transport is http://www.xi-soft.com/

The RA file can then be played on your computer, but needs to be
converted for an mp3 player. I use Magic RM to MP3 for this. Takes a
couple of minutes to convert a 60-minute RA file to MP3.

Hope that helps.

Ahoyhoy

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately Net Transport does not work on my
operating system [Apple OS-X].

What I was thinking of was something like Limewire where I have been
able to download a number of Agatha Christie radio plays [some from
1940s America - very quaint].

Regards...

The good people over at alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc frequently post the
afternoon play soon after it had been broadcast, as well as many archive
recordings. You can download these as mp3 files.

Virgin doesn't seem to carry alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc

Is it actually necessary to have installed the BBC player? Past
experience makes me very wary of BBC-endorsed (enforced?) software,
though recent versions may be less take-over-everything. (Though
conversely may no longer work under '98 lite.)

the BBC player is a lot less take-over than standard Real Player.

I've used Giganews for years and am completely happy with it:

400 years ago a quickly learned lesson of typography was that the eye's
subsequent line recovery works best at about a maximum of 15 words per
line. It's why newspaper columns were invented after the disastrous
start of unreadable single column broadsheet newspapers such as the
Courier, and why my posts, set to monospaced 60 characters, are easy to
read.

Nearly half a millennium has passed and we have to suffer a crop of
ignorant web designers who think line lengths of 20+ are jolly japes.

Incidentally, it seems that the publishers of this site know even less
about copyright and mechanical rights.

You could use a DAB radio, I'm finding that fairly compatible with MP3
with only occasional horrid crunching sounds - why is that? Freeview
seems to be less suitable, but probably technically possible - I can
replay Freeview BBC 7 on a PC in the free download MP3DirectCut. The
Bug, and Revo PicoPlus (Pico), are DAB brands that can store radio
programs, with the Pico accepting SD card and running on built-in
battery. In other respects it is a bit awkward, but it does the job.
On DAB, BBC 7 is mono. You also could record Freeview onto recordable
DVD, I suppose, for which portable players are available. I got a
cheap SD card MP3 player too - Bratz model from Argos, a bit
embarrassing - although on reflection I think maybe it isn't worth the
bother. But I didn't have a player that was any good, anyway. One
other issue with DAB played straight on this MP3 - 'rewind" and
"forward" are quite slow and also liable to lose the place completely
after a bit!
