Desert Island Discs: Rory Stewart
Hi,
I missed this and the BBC website won't let me listen to the content I have
already paid for, so is there any way of getting hold of a transcript or
recording?

Quite an odd chap. Only about 35 or so, but has already lived a few
lives, by all accounts.

From DID's web page:
"Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the former diplomat, traveller and
writer, Rory Stewart.
His life has been part establishment convention, part wild adventure. He
went to Eton, Oxford and then joined the Foreign Office - but along the way
spent part of his childhood running wild in the jungles of Malaysia, was
based in Kosovo during the Nato campaign and, at the age of 29, turned up in
Iraq and volunteered to help in the rebuilding work - he ended up running
one of the provinces. He remains fiercely critical of the war and has
written a well received book about his experiences there.
The event that has changed his outlook on life was the decision he made to
walk 6,000 miles across Asia. It took the best part of two years and
throughout the journey he relied on the hospitality of villagers to give him
food and shelter. Now he spends most of his time in Kabul where he has set
up a charity to support traditional Afghan crafts, but he says his next move
is to return to Britain where he wants to understand more about how our
society works and attempt, he says, to 'normalise' himself."

I don't think they're doing it just to annoy you; it's probably to do with
rights on the music in the programme (or possibly it's Roy Plomley's estate
being awkward). Having said that, for me DID is more about the words than
the music, so perhaps you could suggest they strip out all the music (as
they do with other programmes) and make it available as a podcast.

Obviously a poof who does not want his unnatural proclivities broadcast to a
wider audience.

I agree - I don't understand why they haven't done it like this already? I
suppose that does suggest it's Mr Plumley's estate being difficult - not
unusual if there's a few trustees.

I read a couple of books by him:
Occupational Hazards: My Time Governing Iraq
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Occupational-Hazards-Time-Governing-Iraq/dp/0330440500/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b/203-0725503-5906342?ie=UTF8&qid=1201449474&sr=8-1
and
The Places In Between
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Places-Between-Rory-Stewart/dp/0330486349/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201449474&sr=8-1
They were both amongst the best books I've ever read.
He seems a rather enigmatic character and I was hoping to hear him speak; I
get the impression he might not be very likeable in some ways, but can't put
my finger on why. It might be my natural resentment of Eton alumni.

A minor point: sometimes they overlap words and music, as in
this morning's DiD with Lady Natasha Spender (who didn't seem
to want to stop talking!). If they stripped out the music, some
of the speech would be missing from some podcasts and I don't
think the BBC would be too keen on that (though imho that would
be better than nothing).

It's unlikely to be the music rights that's causing the problem as pure
music shows are available on listen again

Maybe it is costly and/or difficult to secure rights to
broadcast music in easily downloadable form (i.e. podcasts),
and the BBC has only a limited budget for this.
