Sir Mick
has apparently told the Telegraph that pop music isn't worth academic study.
I wonder if this news will ever filter through to the folk at radio 4 who
insist on long dreary programmes of screaming electric guitar clips
punctuated by word wanks. There seem to be more and more such programmes of
late. Anyone for the sociological contribution of Abba to the raging debate
about Jansenism?

I'm with you there. I suppose the problem is that there's something
Marxist about elevating "popular" music to the status of "classical"
music, kind of counter-elitist. So you have to have programmes
juxtaposing the insane ramblings of John Lennon or the pseudo-Chaucerian
mutterings of Rob Zimmerman with proper music. After all, that's what
R4's about, a discourse in righting class wrongs.
