[I] roger quilter's 130th birthday 1/11/07: will r3 be doing aught?
- hi; this first of november will be the one hundred
and thirtieth anniversary of the birth of an undeserv-
edly-forgotten british composer who's begun to see [a]
something of a revival recently: roger quilter, one of
the best-known song-writers of his inter-war years day.
- if he's remembered at all, now, it's usually for the
song, "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" - there can't be
_many_ people who can instantly bring to mind his inci-
dental music for the quite wonderfully - magnificently -
out-dated patriotic play, "Where the Rainbow Ends" -
written by rosamund clifford to celebrate and reinvig-
orate children's enthusiasm for the truly british im-
perial qualities - though the play - operetta? - re-
mained popular through the end of the fifties and into
the sixties, and i remember seeing it at the mermaid
theatre: it was great fun - heroes, heroines, villains
& traitors - it came complete with a dragon king, who
everyone could boo & hiss!
- "ahem. yes. however, and be that as it may," - i've
no idea whether radio 3 will be doing aught to mark
quilter's 130th anniversary - so far as i am aware,
they've done nothing in particular yet, this year; but
i've heard there's meant to be a complete collection
of his songs being released soon on cd [b], and even
if they're not going to devote a full programme to him,
i think it'd be "a pretty poor show" [c], were r3 to
do naught to honour the composer, and the occasion.
- love, ppint.

[a] - not himself, of course (- sfaiaa)
[b] - i've not seen it yet in lancaster, but we only
have a hmv here now, so it may even be out;
i think it will be/is the first ever complete
recording of his songs
[c] - the phrasing seems peculiarly appropriate...

He's been dead for fifty-four years. Isn't it about time that people stop
celebrating his birthdays? Look what happened with that palestinian guy
which they've celebrated the birthday of for two thousand years now. It's
no good. Dead is dead, and he's just as dead on his birthday as any other
day.
Regards,
