Manchester Shostakovich cycle
It seems a bit quiet round here... I wonder if anyone has been listening
to the Halle/BBC Phil Shostakovich cycle, either live or on the radio? Any
opinions?
I went to see the BBC Philharmonic last night under Vassily Sinaisky and
they did a wonderful job of the Shostakovich 8th symphony - very much
worth listening to when it's broadcast. It was one of those occasions
where all you can say is - it felt like I was hearing the work for the
first time. It was very stark and bold and helped by some magificent
playing, especially from the brass section.

Similarly the Shostakovich 5th last Saturday in Leeds Town Hall was
absolutely brilliant - electric even - with Gianandrea Noseda conducting the
BBC Phil. However, I'm afraid that concert may never see the light of day
on Radio 3 - the Barber violin concerto had police siren accompaniment at
one point, and the microphones could hardly fail to pick up Noseda's vocal
contribution to the Shostakovich, let alone the podium resounding to his
jumping and stamping!

There was a bit of jumping around from Vassily Sinaisky too, listen out
for that tomorrow evening! But it was great to watch him, so I'll forgive
a bit of stomping.
