Comeback kid Chris Evans was named Music Radio Personality of the Year
tonight at the industry's equivalent of the Oscars.

The Radio 2 star triumphed at the Sony Radio Academy Awards, beating Jamie
Theakston of Heart 106.2, Lauren Laverne of Xfm, Marc Riley of BBC 6 Music
and Virgin's Tim Lovejoy.

Evans, sacked from Virgin Radio in 2001 after embarking on a very public
drinking binge, returned to the airwaves last year with a Saturday afternoon
show on Radio 2 and recently took over Johnnie Walker's drivetime slot.

His win will dismay the listeners who bombarded the station with angry
emails after he was named as Walker's successor.

More than 1,000 listeners voiced their complaints - prompting Radio 2
controller Lesley Douglas to issue a statement insisting Evans be given a
chance.
