Serge Gainsbourg
Just discovered what a talented songwriter he was, having heard tonight's
BBC-R2 documentary on him and then checking out a load of his songs
(Elisa, Couleur Cafe etc. etc. etc) on Youtube

and to think all I knew about him was Je t'aime

didn't even know he wrote Poupée de cire, poupée de son!

I thought I recognised the tune - one of Chopin's (etude/nocturne?)

I smiled when they mentioned in the doc that this song was banned in the UK
until someone discovered that the title actually meant "lemon peel" or
something equally innocent.

He sometimes used melodies from classical music. Like for _Babe Alone in
Babylone_ (Brahms)

La Javanaise
Je Suis Venu te Dire que je m'en Vais
La Chanson de Prévert
La Ballade de Johnny Jane
Les Sucettes
Harley Davidson
Ex-Fan des Sixties

The lyrics are on the same level.
