It's safe to turn the radio on after 6am... but only for the next two weeks!
Yep, SK has taken two weeks leave so Aled Jones is sitting in for her this
and next week. He sounds quite good in the morning, lets hope that one day
someone will finally realise this!!

I find AJ mildly irritating, but he's certainly better than old airhead.
It's nice to have Johnnie Walker sitting in for Terry Wogan for a couple of
weeks. I still miss JW's evening Drivetime show, but it was his decision
to give it up after all. It's just a pity that they brought in a c*** like
Chris Evans.

Aled Jones is usually entertaining to me, as Is Johnnie Walker, although
he does get a little difficult to listen to sometimes, seeming to push
just a bit too far. I also get cross with the beatification I read of
him on various NGs.

It's a little ambiguous whether you're referring to AJ or JW here, but
although I've seen praise heaped on JW in various places, I've never heard
people refer to him as a saint, which he sure isn't (thank goodness). He's
flawed and has paid for those flaws over the years, but he brings a unique
warmth and the human touch to his broadcasting. AJ isn't quite seasoned or
experienced enough yet, but with time I think he could get there.

JW was the subject, sorry for the poor grammar. I feel he is seen as
beyond criticism by some, as is Wogan the Queen Mother of Broadcasting.

Excellent. I've got a lot of time for Stuart Maconie. I nearly wrote just
"SM" but didn't want to give the wrong impression :-)

I really must get back into listening to MR's show. I used to enjoy it
when he presented it alone (though usually with a guest such as Noddy
Holder) and later at night so I could listen before drifting off into
slumberland. With MR and SM together it still isn't a bad show, but I just
don't get to listen in enough. Perhaps I should give it another go whenever
there's nothing worth watching on the telly.

I don't miss JW in the evenings. I'm not thrilled with CE but I don't
miss JW. I'm afraid this week we've been turning JW off in the mornings.
The music he plays is ace, but stuck in traffic queues we can hear what
he's saying and frankly he comes across as patronising and sexist.

That's not untrue, but I wouldn't say it was untrue of the regular incumbent
either, so I'd have thought you buy into that sort of thing if you listen at
that time.

I have the same difficulty. 20:00-22:00 is not the most convenient time. I'm
usually only just home from work or walking home from the station (in which
case I do listen on my phone radio - Tuesdays and Wednesdays after Desmond
Carrington and Mike Harding, respectively, and Mondays and Thursdays after
an hour of Roger Day on BBC Southern Counties). Once I'm home it tends to be
food, telly etc.
When MR was first moved to 20:00 I used to ignore the show and then 'Listen
Again' to it, starting at 22:00, in the traditional slot - but I've got out
of the habit of doing that, especially as I used to like listening to Simon
Mayo and Steve Lamacq's specialist shows. Now that they've rejigged all of
those I suppose that I could go back to listening to MR & SM again. It's
just remembering and getting back into the habit that's the problem!
BTW, Noddy Holder still puts in his regular TV review appearances every
couple of weeks.

I caught about 20 minutes of the MR/SM show last night with a bit of Jack
Bruce on the way home from a bowls match, via a pub to drown our sorrows
(non-alcoholicly) having lost. It was enjoyable enough to make me think
about tuning in of an evening more often.

Yes, I have heard him on the show a few times but I just don't listen in
regularly enough. Must try harder ;-)

I've been known to turn off Wogan too, but not half as often as JW. I
don't know, but TW seems to do it to tease whereas JW just comes across

Fridays are a bit different - I'd be chuffed, but we go swimming after
work and get back to the car about the right time for The News Quiz,
which is a wonderful half-hour if we can get the 4yo to nap through it!

I never get that impression of JW. IMHO the laddishness is all
tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps it's a man thing ;-)

Planned my day to listen to SM this afternoon and then that Ginger T**t was

Well all I can say is that I reported what Maconie said live on his
first show back with Radcliffe after Radcliffe's return from the

The ginger one must have changed his holiday plans.

I thought about these comments at the time and didn't really agree...
I don't notice Johnny being particularly offensive or opinionated or
having any attitude problem, but having listened in to Wigon's show a
few times lately I was appalled at the innuendo the poor "traffic
totty" has to endure from those sad middle aged men with nothing
better to do who write in to the show every day. *That's* what I call
offenive.

Oh, come on! It's just a bit of harmless fun. If "poor" Lyn Bowles (or
whoever the day's 'traffic totty' is) didn't think so too she would make it
known to the producers, off air, in no uncertain terms. If it was truly
offensive people would be complaining and the BBC would tell Wogan to stop
broadcasting the letters. In any case, Wogan stops short of reading out
anything that's too close to the knuckle. It's your own imagination that's
offending you, not the stuff that's being broadcast.

Mr Clews, I rarely find myself disagreeing with you, but here we go.
The bit of my imagination which offends me is the part that suspects
Ms Bowles heart sinks a little as each one of these letters is read
out. I get that impression sometimes listening to her voice. Being a
constant object of fascination for being female, attractive and Welsh
would certainly wear me down after just a little time [though I am
none of the above, unfortunately].
I remember listening in the days she first appeared on the W*g*n show
[why the newsreaders had to replace her previously and why the
arrangement was changed I don't know]. There appeared to be a lot of
tension and hesitancy between them. Then somebody realised she was
Welsh and this tide of letters started. At the time I think it
provided a little relief, but each time I go back for a listen they
are still at it. I would be interested to know whether Ms Bowles
encourages this sort of attention, or whether it's now more like a
rollercoaster going too fast to slam on the brakes.
In this day and age, is there anywhere else a journalist endures this
"harmless" stereotypical public teasing day in, day out before being
allowed to do his/her job?

I don't necessarily disagree with you and you made some perfectly good
points, but I stand by my assertion that if Ms Bowles wasn't happy with the
situation she would have made it known. I honestly think the
political-correctness brigade have had it their own way for far too long,
and there is plenty of room for playful, teasing banter provided that clear
boundaries are agreed upon and that it does not upset the object of that
banter.

And she does seem to be quite good at giving it back too!

You bet she is. I am certain that Ms Bowles is no pushover. She certainly
seems like quite a feisty lass.

She laughed at some of the comments made this morning - not a forced
laughed and she was off-mic so obviously wasn't primed to expect the
comments.

JW is the only one I would deliberately tune in for the rest (aside from SK
and CE) are tolerable.
