Stephen Tompkinson on Radio 2
Radio Today
24 April 2008

Thursday 24 April 2008: Brassed Off and Wild at Heart star Stephen
Tompkinson is to present a four part series on BBC Radio 2, about the UK's
love affair with brass bands and brass music.

The story has been created and produced by Made in Manchester Productions,
and marks the first series commission for the indie by Radio 2 controller
Lesley Douglas.

Made in Manchester Productions' creative director Ashley Byrne says: "Brass
bands have played a major part in British culture for almost two hundred
years and this series will be a lively celebration of all things brass.

"From their early roots to the competitiveness of brass banding, it'll all
be in there. We'll also be examining the influence of brass bands in our
social and political history and on our popular culture - in film and TV
scores and of course in popular music. We'll also be looking at how brass is
enjoying something of a renaissance in some parts of the country with
younger generations developing new brass band sounds."

Those featuring in the series include Terry Wogan, Dana, veteran actor Tony
Booth, film and TV composer Nigel Hess, former Labour leader Neil Kinnock
and international cricket umpire Dickie Bird.

Not my cup of tea though I did briefly play in a brass band when I was
around thirteen. Very much my dad's sort of thing though. I think I'll
be downloading these and putting them on a disk for him to listen to
in his greenhouse.

Thanks for the heads up MIke

I second that; it's nice to be forewarned about a show that I must avoid
at all costs. Far from sharing the UK's apparent "love affair", I loathe
brass-band music with an almost irrational red passion. Whenever I watch a
TV show that includes this type of music as incidental or signature music,
it has me reaching for the channel button. I apologise if this offends
anyone and of course I do not deny anyone the right to enjoy this type of
music. Just had to get this off my chest, that's all. :-)

Andy -

Each to their own. If you substitute <country and western> for <brass-band>
in your post it would reflect my own feelings entirely :-)

Actually, it would partially reflect mine too, as C&W is close behind BB on
my list of loathed musical genres :-)

for his easy-listening style.

From 1964-1986 he led the BBC One ratings, his particular brand of laid-back
entertainment surviving the revolutionary 60s, IRA campaigns and a variety
of changing musical styles.

The hour-long programme Includes interviews with Rolf Harris, John Williams,

Funnily enough, those two are tied equal at the top with brass band.

By simple process of elimination, almost anything but the above.

With a little bit of baroque punk on the side.
