Craig Charles All Singing, All Dancing, All New Year's Eve Radio show!
New Years Eve Monday: 31st December 2007
1.00a.m to 4.00a.m.
BBC Radio Two
Taking a break, from his BBC 6 Music Funk and Soul show, Northern Soul
fanatic, Craig Charles presents, this year's All Singing, All Dancing, All
New
Year's Eve!
Craig welcomes the New Year, with another selection of Northern Soul
classics, new CD releases, special guests, and a listener-requests
extravaganza!
Northern Soul has been, one of the most extraordinary and potent underground
movements, in the history of of popular music. Starting around 1967 few
musical
genres have produced fans, as dedicated and obsessive, as those who made,
the
weekly pilgrimage, from every corner of the British Isles to Northern Soul
clubs,
such as the Twisted Wheel, in Manchester, the Torch in Stoke, the Mecca in
Blackpool, and most famous of all, the Wigan Casino.
Northern Soul devotees have an insatiable appetite for obscure tracks, which
bred,
the spectacular athletic dance styles, at the all-night sessions. The
collectors, are
even more obsessive, than the dancers, paying huge sums for previously
unheard
rarities, the top figure, being £15,000 for Frank Wilson's Do I Love You
(Indeed I
Do).
Presenter: Craig Charles
Producter: Helen Reed

Is this appropriate for New Year? It seems to me this represents a
minority interest and R2 should be catering for a wide range of
musical tastes and interests with a need to be particularly aware of
those who for whatever reason are on their own at this time of year.
Although I will not myself be listening to the radio, I think there
may be others out there who are not particularly happy about this.

Happy or not its been the staple diet of New Year for at least the past 5
years. Personally I cant think of a better radio option. But then Im a
Northern fan. I dont see what your gripe is. You wont be listening buit
you arent happy about it being on? How bizzare. The concept of only
wanting things you approve of even when you arnt listening is amazing. I
suspect you are one of those people who is not happy unless they are
unhappy.
Seasons greetings to you

Okay, perhaps I did not make myself clear. My concern is that I
suspect there may be older people around who either cannot go out, do
not have family and friends visiting or othewise feel lonely over the
festive season, which can be a particularly difficult time for some
people. Only today I got an e-mail from the '1 is the saddest number'
campaign.
I'm not suggesting that older people don't like northern soul but I
suspect many would prefer something more tradiitional. At a time when
the population is getting older there is a risk of R2 marginalising a
section of the population.
It's not that I want things that I approve of when I am not listening,
which would truly be bizarre, but wanting more thought to be given to
the needs of others.

Scouses are really annoying and Craig Charles is no exception.
99% of what is on on NYE is shite anyway... Jools Holland is another
prime example.
I just go to bed early. (Not that I can sleep, for the saddos letting
fireworks off)
F##k soul & NYE.

Fair enough, what would you suggest as an option then?

I for one will be loving it and the timing is near perfect really and
totally fits into the minority spot for a few reasons.
(a) this show has had this time slot for the past five years and if
there was a groundswell of complaints I think it would have been axed
before now.
(b) most people, not including those wonderful people who have to work
at this time of night and year, are in bed... with the possible
exception of party-hearty types and I doubt that they will be tuned into
radio 2 anyway...
(c) northern soul aficionados are used to being up at all-niters anyway
(and I mean that in the legal senses) the show is possibly trying to
give an all-niter' feel. I loved Stuart Maconie doing this show and do
feel worried about Craig Charles carrying on the crown though...
Merry Christmas! :-)

tunes so we shall see I guess.

I really don't know. For the reasons I have set out I don't think I
am in a position to judge. I just think it should be more
'inclusive'.
