Clive Anderson...
... is filling in for Parkinson for a few weeks, he says, until BBC
can figure out a replacement for Parky. Duh! They had several weeks
notice that he was quitting and they haven't got something new lined
up yet. Oh, that's right, it's Christmas and what with all the office
parties, chasing dolly birds etc....
Anderson is certainly not up for the job. Three or maybe four times a
couple of weeks ago he introduced a piece of music that was played and
then he immediately had to issue a correction to his introduction at
the behest of the producer. Talk about a public woodshedding! And then
when he was interviewing James Taylor, he kept being taken by surprise
when Taylor strummed his guitar. And if you think Parky is a
groveller, well...
Parky gave the impression he was just chatting with his mates, but
Anderson gives the impression of a guy who is trying to do a passable
job of presenting a radio show before he goes for Sunday lunch. I hate
it when presenters use comments like "o, right" to cover up their
total ignorance of a topic. Parky always seemed well prepared and like
a good lawyer would not ask a question to which he did not know the
answer.
I guess we "fans" hardly have a clue as to what technical skills the
BBC is looking for in presenters. We just tend to respond to whether
we like the personality of the presenter and take their technical
broadcasting skills for granted, though they may be much rarer than we
think.
Got to love Laycock. Never a word out of place, though he must
rerecord the stumbles, and the judicious insertion of little George
Formby-style chuckles at various points of the narrative. He has been
playing some great music lately in the second half of the show, with
some fine new releases coming out for Christmas on labels like Dutton
Vocalion and Jasmine. When I was young I never had the time of day for
the Ted Heath Orchestra, but shit, those guys could play and some of
the arrangements are as cute as hell.
I have stopped listening to Elaine Paige. She and I are no longer an
item. She has been replaced by David Jacobs.
Happy Christmas listening to all.

Well, I'd rather they took their time looking for a replacement than
hastily saddling us with a complete moron.

Nerves, perhaps? Can happen to anyone.

I think we all need to remember that Parky was a seasoned pro at the
interviewing game, so I don't think it's all that fair to compare these two.
I think Anderson's famous Bee Gees incident some years ago is a testament to
his 'skills' as an interviewer. Perhaps having been a barrister didn't
help...

You've finally seen the light, then.
To be honest, Sundays on R2 is a waste of time for me, apart from Johnnie
Walker, but even then I'm not often tuned in. David Jacobs is fine as a
means of getting to sleep. No offence intended there to DJ, because he's a
consummate professional at the broadcasting game. I'm not really into "our
kind of music" as he puts it, but it's a pleasant enough way to drop off.

She is bloody awful. It's like listening to paint drying. Even Lulu
was better.

Well said. Well, Sunday afternoon, certainly.

I'm usually doing other things on Sunday night. It is Sunday afternoon
that has been wrecked. Bring back Desmond and Russell. It's on Sunday
that we need them (even if it's just repeats of their week-night shows!).

On the contrary; Anderson id doing a fine job, IMO. He'd make a
good permanent replacement for Parky.

Just noticed the above, which most people would take to mean that Anderson
does not *want* the job. Perhaps you actually meant to say "... not up TO
the job"?

Perhaps the PP just prefers to speak and write in white-collar
Americanisms and might even be of the opinion that Anderson, whilst
perhaps not up for the job now, was up for it from the get-go, back in
the day?
