Seems sensible. The idea of presenters driving up the M6 to present
their shows from Birmingham then driving back again was neither
environmentally friendly nor a sensible use of use of time and
resources.

Except the presenters affected all live in the West Midlands, so they'll be
driving down the M6/M1/M40 instead.

Not necessarily, they may go by train or take the A roads

I thought I heard Janice Long talking about her journey, but I could
be mistaken.

Janice occasionally travels up to London during the day for BBC events and
other appointments, then back in time for her late-night show. To be honest,
with her and her family settled in Birmingham, I wouldn't be surprised if
she decides not to move. Having done the London "thing" for many years when
she was on Radio 1 and with a much younger family, I can't imagine her being
keen to head back there. Paul, her other half, is settled in the WM; Fred,
her eldest, has just left school and Blue is just at secondary school age.

Your research is obviously a lot more thorough than mine.
If the people involved are based in the West Midlands that demolishes
my original argument.

Crikey!
Outbreak of intelligent discussion on Usenet...
It won't last.
Are you guys new here ? What normally happens is the rigid defense of
ones original position at all costs.
Mind you this is a Radio 2 area.
Ah well, back to Linux Vs Micro$oft

I've been posting here for four or five years - but I don't tend to post
prolifically, due to work pressures. We do occasionally get some good
discussions going - it depends on whose contributing!

Thanks, but I should have checked the position more thoroughly before
posting in the interests of informed discussion.

Not if it is indefensible though.

Like the :-
"A BBC spokesman said today: "There will be seven Radio 2 jobs affected
and nine radio resource jobs and all staff will be given the opportunity
to move to London.
"The changes are expected to come into effect early next year."
Other programmes like Gardeners' World, Countryfile, Coast and Midlands
Today will continue to be based at the Mailbox along with Radio 4's The
Archers.
Dalziel and Pascoe and Doctors are made at the BBC's drama village in
Selly Oak, but one rumour is that next year Doctors might go to
Manchester and be replaced by Casualty from Bristol."
bit!
That's 16 BBC staff involved. GW, CF, Coast, Doctors are mainly hired
in staff!
So we get rid of the staff, and keep the indies.

Is it me, or can anyone else see the irony of 'Coast' being produced in
Birmingham ! Mind you, so was 'Howard's Way' :-)

"It's only 72 miles..." so what's the problem?
Maybe if our glorious know-it-all leaders hadn't shut down all regional
production facilities...
Now remind me, what was the reason for moving R2 overnights to BM in the
first place? Wasn't it about putting more stuff into the regions? Or is my
memory faulty? If so, why move it back? They'll probably move it again in
2012 to Manchester.
And what are studios 9A,B,C going to do I wonder? There was sod all happening
in the day when I've been there and now there'll be nothing at night either.

Ha, I can't quite imagine BBC South managing to fit the set of Howard's Way
inside that studio at South Western House :-) The boys up the road at TVS
could have managed it of course, if (AIUI) they hadn't turned the scripts down.

Ed Stewart's Junior Choice shows on both Sept 30th, and Dec 24th were
broadcast/recorded there, but apart from that .......?
