Popmaster
So Popmaster is allowed to return to Radio 2, but they're still doing
the 'celeb' ones instead. Of course, it means the 'celeb' can come on and
promote whatever they're doing at the moment, get help with answering the
questions and the Beeb doesn't have to pay for any prizes.

Can't see it going back to normal any time soon :(

It's amazing how useless musical celebs can be on Popmaster. Chris Squire
and Steve Hackett guested on Wednesday and I thought SH was particularly
clueless, even with what I thought were easy questions. Best stick to the
guitar-playing, Steve :-)

'Twas always the way though - I noticed the same sort of thing when they had
occasional celebs on there before, and indeed when you got a member of the
public who was a part-time DJ or something they never seemed to get any
benefit out of their supposed expertise.

Chris Squire is bass player with Yes. Steve Hackett was with Genesis from
1971 to 1978, but has been quite successful in his own right since.

Apropos nothing, SH was in the audience at the 'G2' Genesis tribute band's
concert at Charterhouse on November 3rd and I was sitting in the same row
as him a few yards away. A fantastic gig that was. I think SH was
impressed too - one of his comments later was that he was chuffed that his
"little doodles" from his days with Genesis were still appreciated so much.

But then it's all too easy for us to be critical from the listeners' side.
It's a different story when you're on air and being listened to by
millions. The Popmaster contestants (back in the days when Joe Public took
part) often used to say that.

Methinks you missed my winkey face thingy, but my brain was a little fuddled
as I thought you meant Steve Howe

Oh goody. I thought the blanket ban on phone-in competitions was ludicrous.

I know what you mean, but OTOH I think a lot of the output has been improved
by it.

In many cases, yes. I did used to enjoy the 'public' Popmaster though
whenever I had the chance to lusten in. The celeb version rendered it
meaningless (and the celebs were very often completely useless).

Hopefully we'll get the "finals" of the 2007 games before they launch into a
bunch of new contestants. Otherwise, if I'd been a 39 or 36 pointer in 2007
I'd been feeling rather hard done by! Not that I shall probably hear it - my
current working schedule doesn't give me time to listen and I'll be hard
pressed to find much time to "Listen Again".
