Wogan describes "most amazing" radio day
November 14 2007
By James Welsh, International Editor - Digital Spy

Sir Terry Wogan said today that the amount of money raised by BBC Radio 2's
Auction of Things That Money Can't Buy for Children in Need represented "the
most amazing, the most wonderful day I've ever had on radio".

During the day, Martin Ainscough from Wigan bid £250,000 for Aled Jones and
Katie Melua to perform a gig at Revolution in Manchester to raise money for
the Prince's Trust. The bid took Radio 2's Children in Need auction total
for 2007 so far to £649,000, which is already higher than the 2006 total of
£512,450.

Other top bids included £75,000 for the opportunity to have lunch with Sir
Terry and Sir Roger Moore.

And my accountant got the Routemaster bus ride with Ken Bruce for £15k. I
must be paying him too much. ;-)

Wow! Having Aled Jones do a gig at the revolution has got to be worth
£250k of *anyone's* money!

While on the subject of things that money can't buy, a chocolate
starfish would be high on my list.

Blimey at that price,I would hope that Roger or Terry would at least buy the
lunch!

There are some things money can't buy - but lunch with Terry Wogan isn't one
of them. During the BBC Radio 2 Auction Of Things That Money Can't Buy for
BBC Children in Need one listener bid £75,000 for a date with Sir Terry and
Roger Moore.

Why does Sir Tel keep referring to these as "things that money can't buy"
when you have to bid money to get them? Enquiring minds wish to know.

school.

Yeah, and he never shut up going on about it all morning. As if the
average listener can afford the sort of stuff they are auctioning.

I wouldn't mind if he did it for free, like all the other presenters,
but he gets paid huge sums of money for it. As if he isn't short of
money.

I hit the off switch & kept it off all day. Add to that, Friday is the
best night on TV & they go put that garbage on all night.

I'll support my own charities without having C.I.N. rammed down my
throat every year, thank you.

No - but a tune would be nice.
And I cannot abide her voice.
In all seriousness I cannot see her appeal at all. I find her music bland at
best, and banal at worst.

You miss the point. The things they auction on his show are not aimed at
the average listener. They're aimed at the well-heeled listeners in an
effort to extract the maximum amount of money from them. Isn't that the
whole point? Nearly 900,000 quid raised from the week's auctions can't be
wrong. That's got to be better than the few tens of thousands they used to
raise when they first started doing these auctions.

> I wouldn't mind if he did it for free, like all the other presenters,

He waives his TV fee on CIN night, and maybe donates his pay for the week as
well, who knows?

One night per year. One channel among loads and loads. I don't see that
as any cause for complaint.

He waived his fee 'this' year because it was discovered that he

Now I didn't say that I actually *watched* it, and I agree that much of it
is a load of tosh. The point I was making was that there is plenty else to
watch (or indeed, do) if you don't want to watch CIN. In fact I was out
bowling for much of the evening. However, I recorded from 11pm-midnight so
as to catch the delicious Fiona Bruce doing 'All That Jazz' from 'Chicago'.

Ohhhhhh yes.
As well as the best legs in the newsreading business, she had a good

I heard her latest effort this morning, and it's sunk to new depths
with a prosaic song about UA.
You can't seriously rhyme "moustache" with "much cash" - twice - and
put it forward as a single.
What next? A song about Sarah Kennedy's beetle having its annual
service? We could start writing it for her. Morning - dawning -
yawning... There's a start. It would be guaranteed airplay on R2, even
as a demo...
What rhymes with "oil change"?

I don't think SK has a Beetle anymore. She sold the one she referred to as
"Bot" last year, and I'm not sure if she bought another one. They were
briefly popular but think most of the trendies buy Minis (a.k.a. BMW 1/2
("half") Series) now.
