Music during new interviews
I was listening to a news report on R2 at about 5pm tonight (8th Nov) on
a personal radio with headphones. The report was about the value of the
US Dollar and its effect on American tourists visiting the UK. The BBC2
news person was talking to some financial/tourism punter about this, but
all I could focus on was the background music with an annoying
tick-tick-tick beat.

I don't usually listen much to R2 so I don't know how long the media
studies students have been putting sound tracks at the back of R2 news
articles, and which Algernon decided it would be a good idea - but it
was soooooooooo bl**dy annoying and totally unnecessary.

TIME TO COMPLAIN

..as a previous thread put it

...and R2, not BBC2 (it's too late - I'm off to bed)

It's a feature of Chris Evans' version of Drivetime. The background
music for the travel reports are generally louder than on other shows
and the music behind the sports features is also irritating.

Didn't hear that, but was listening the other day to a documentary
about Sir Tim Berners and the founding of the Internet--I guess it
must have been on Radio 4, and there was loud, intrusive, and very
ugly background music that kept bursting in. It was like trying to
listen to a radio station in the car that is fading out as you get out
of range and other stations are intruding into the signal. Probably
the thinking is "hey we don't have a lot of young listeners, young
listeners like music, let's put music into talk shows so young people
will listen".

Nice one :-)

Seriously though, someone (Roger Bolton?) asked someone (in authority)
about the "background" music to such items on radio and telly, and
they said something to the effect of :- "We have to do it to attract
young people, or their attention drifts".

Explains a lot, I think.
