Agreed.

I was listening to a Judie Tzuke album (Queen Secret Keeper) last night, and
I thought how similar her voice is to Annie Lennox's.

I don't like her. One of the why sing one note when you can sing ten
brigade. Liked her much more in her days with the Tourists. I'm
briefly in the video for 'So Good To Be Back Home Again' which was
filmed at Quanton railway station.

Very interesting program on R2 last night about melody with carious
producers decrying te vocal histrionics used by the likes of Houston,
Carey, Lennox et al.

One told a story of how Whitney Houston came to to the stidio and did
a take of a song with her usual vocal acrobatics and licks, picked up
her coat and bag and heade for the door. She was shocked when the
producer told her to put tem down because he wanted her to do another

She told him, 'I gave you evrything I had on that take. What else can
I give you?'

He replied, 'The melody Miss Houston, the melody.'

I don't think that I'd necessarily agree with that, Andy, although there are
certain registers where they come very close (and sometimes in phrasing).
Jude is ten times more interesting than Annie for me. Sometimes I find that
Annie really grates and I can't abide the really schmaltzy stuff that she
sometimes does. On the other hand, I'm not so keen on Jude's output since
the turn of the millenium - she's lost the rocky edge and become far too
ballad-heavy since "Under The Angels". I saw Jude on virtually every tour
from 1979 to 2001 but I haven't been inclined to bother with the recent
shows. :-( Bailey Tzuke, Jude and Paul Muggleton's daughter, is
showing great promise as a singer and looks set to follow her mum's success.
Jude seems to be involving herself in songwriting with other people a lot
now, having been instrumental in some of Lucie Silvas' (aka Lucie Silverman,
former JT backing vocalist) career - she co-wrote some of the album with
Lucie; she also has a track on her (Judie's) new album co-written with, of
all people, Gareth Gates!

You must be as old as I am. :)

The only one of their songs I can clearly recall though, is 'I Only Want
To Be With You'.

Well, OK, I was basing my observation on couple of tracks; I'll concede
that she's not like Lennox all of the time :-)

Thanks for the other info about JT. I'm no great fan of hers but she's nice
to listen to now and again.

Isn't that just a Dusty Springfield cover, or is it one of their own songs
with the same title?

It is indeed the same song, and it's the only Tourists one I can remember
too, which might not be a great testament to their songwriting. Mind you I
was only a baby then.

The Toursists were a bloody good band. They had a single out called
The Loneliest Man In The World which was excellent.

Hardly "stalking" you Phoebe, this just happens to be one of the newsgroups
I frequently read ..... and with me being a mid 1970's to early 1990's music
bore and all, I just had to mock your lack of knowledge when presented with
the opportunity ! ;)

Personally I like one or two of her songs, but I find her a tad tedious to
listen to in the main. So I wont be listening especially.

I would say my 'music bore' period(s) were : late 70's-mid 80's & since
2003-ish (the latter period due to the advent of the Sky music
channels).

Well, I originally got it to watch Friends episodes months before they
appeared on terrestrial TV.

It was a while after that, after I'd got tired of endlessly repeated
documentaries, that I discovered the music channels.

I can take it or leave it so far as Lennox is concerned, but
as I was stuck in the car on Saturday evening, I tuned in to
this. It was bloody awful. The lousy sound quality was bad
enough, but Lennox was even worse - frequently off key, and
persistently over egging the vocal gymnastics; just sing the
bloody song woman! She absolutely ruined several of her
better numbers - 'No More I Love Yous' in particlar.

The only redeeming features were the orchestral arrangements
for some numbers ('Sweet Dreams' being a good example), and
the backing vocalists, who rescued the drowning Lennox on
several occasions.

Overall, though, a massive disappointment. Someone should
tell Lennox that she's not the live performance singer that
she evidently believes herself to be.
