Bulstrode here.
Trouble is it plays up to the worst excesses of 'musical'
theatre where singers compete to make a noise louder and
longer at the end of 'a real belter' so that other singers
like our Elaine are impressed enough to go "wooooooo" at
the end of it, while the rest of us are left with our hands
over our ears or have already switched off because we know
what's coming.
I'm miffed I didn't discover Edward Seckerson's (sp?) spot
on R3, until its last/penultimate programme, where I heard
demonstrated to me how good Barbara Streisand is as a
singer, something I had never appreciated before.
I agree about Russel Davies too. Someone else you can learn from.
