Chart Commentary 15/4/06
Singles
-------
As expected, Gnarls Barkley massively increases his lead at #1, with his
combined sales being well into 6 figures! It looks certain he'll soon
take over as the years best-selling single so far, from Notorious BIG
The Mary J Blige/U2 combo climb to #2, making this her biggest hit.
The highest genuine NE though, was the Zutons, at #9.
Other NE's
Top 20 : Franz Ferdinand #14,, Mish Mash #16, Michael Jackson #17
Top 30 : Belle & Sebastian #25, Charlatans #28, D4L #29
Top 40 : none
An amazing total of 14 climbers within the top 40 this week, only 4 of
which were due to CD sales kicking in.
How long since there were that many, outside of the Xmas period?
One notable omission is Nizlopi, who fail to make even the top 80 with
their follow-up to the JCB Song - thus almost certainly condemning them
to one-hit-wonder status.
Albums
------
Morrissey claims his 3rd #1 album, after narrowly missing out with his
last, in 2004.
Massive Attack remain at #2, while Embrace, as usual, slip rapidly away.
Pink secures a position of #3, while the Flaming Lips get their first
top 10 album at #6. The Stereophonics live album claims the #13 slot.
Next Week
---------
Singles
-------
Can't see even Shayne Ward shifting Gnarls, as I suspect the former's
freak Xmas sales will not be remotely repeatable.
Top 10 : Gorillaz, Filterfunk
Top 20 : Michael Jackson, Jamie Foxx, Lorraine, Trina, Mark Morrison
Top 30 : Brian Kennedy, Hard-Fi, Jose Gonzales, Studio B
Top 40 : Energies
I can't see anything obvious that'll chart on downloads alone, but
perhaps one or two will sneak in.
Albums
------
The Streets must have a good chance of being #1, and on the list I've
seen, look likely to be the only new album in the top 20.
