Chart Commentary 8/4/06
Singles
-------
Just 4 weeks after pre-release downloads became eligible for the chart,
we have our first download-only #1!
The song in question is Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy'.
AIUI, it would also have been #1 on its download sales 2 weeks ago & #3
last week had it been eligible.
Other NE's : Morrissey #3, Streets #8, Depeche Mode #12, Michael Jackson
#17, Mary J Blige/U2 #19 (d/l) , Milburn #22, Various Artists #28, Royal
Ballet Sinfonia #29, Pipettes #35.
Also - three CD-release 'new entries' : Kooks #6, Editors #21, Automatic
#32
Albums
------
As expected, Embrace claim their 3rd #1 album, just ahead of Massive
Attack.
Last weeks top 2, Journey South & Andy Abrahams, suffer huge sales drops
to end up at just #3 & #4 respectively.
Just 1 other top 20 NE : Yeah Yeah Yeah's #7.
There must have been a sale on somewhere too, as there were some
unexpected big climbs : BEP, Green Day, Gorillaz, etc.
Next Week
---------
Singles
-------
A no-brainer prediction for next weeks #1 - if Gnarls can go #1 on
downloads alone, it will massively increase its lead with CD sales
kicking in.
Top 10 : Babyshambles, MJB/U2, Zutons
Top 20 : Michael Jackson, Gorillaz(d/l), Franz Ferdinand, Shane Ward
(d/l)
Top 30 : Mish Mash, D4L, Subways
Top 40 : Lethal Bizzle, Mark Morrisson, OK Go
Albums
------
Looks like #1 will be between Morrissey & Pink, with the latter being my
pick (though the former will probably lead initially).
I suspect the Flaming Lips will go top 10, with Erasure, Daft Punk &
Stereophonics top 20.
