Chart Commentary 1/4/06
Singles
-------
For the 2nd week in a row, we've had a climber to #1 - when was the last
time that happened, I wonder?

Unfortunately that climber was Ne-Yo, rather than Pink as I hoped. She
has to settle for #4*.

The highest genuine NE was Embrace, with (their IMO fairly mediocre)
'Nature's Law' at #2.

Outside the top 10 there were 'new entries' for :

Sean Paul #11*, Michael Jackson #16, Yeah Yeah Yeah's #18* MVP #22*,
Nelly #24*, Strokes #25*, Kooks #28, Lacuna Coil #40

* = climber, having charted on downloads last week.

Albums
------
The top 2 albums are both by artists I'd never heard of until a week
ago.

They are both apparently X-Factor rejects, with Journey South prevailing
over Andy Abraham.

Of the artists who've had/may have long-term career prospects, Prince is
the highest NE at #9. Beverley Knight's is the only other top 20 NE, at
#10.

A very 'Mothers Day' feel to the chart though, with climbs for David
Essex, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis, Will Young & the Carpenters.

Next Week

Singles
-------
Looks likely that Ne-Yo will hang on at #1.

I expect both the Streets & Morrissey to debut in the top 5, and Gnarls
Barclay may well be the first artist to debut in the top 10 on download
sales alone.

Top 20 : Andy Abraham, Depeche Mode, Editors, Kooks, Michael Jackson
Top 30 : David Gray, Prince
Top 40 : Keith Urban, Secret Machines

Undoubtedly there will be one or two that'll make it just on download
sales, but without knowing which of the 3/4 releases will qualify, I
can't even begin to guess.

Albums
------
At least this prediction is a lot easier - Embrace for #1.

Massive Attack may go top 5, and Yeah Yeah Yeah's possibly top 10. I
expect this week's top three to plummet.
