Chart Commentary 11/3/06
Singles
-------
Unfortunately my prediction was accurate - the brain-dead chavs *did*
rush out and buy Chico's X-Factor trash. :(

Other New Entries :

Top 10 : PCD #2, Orson #5, The Feeling #7, Shakira #9 :),
Top 20 : Charlotte Church #14, Michael Jackson #15, Keisha White #17,
Freemasons #19, Graham Coxon #20
Top 30 : Rakes #22, Mystery Jets #23, Jack Johnson #28
Top 40 :Hot Chip #32, Young Knives #36, Upper Room #38

A total of 16 NE's in the top 40 - totally unexpected, and very much the
highest number for 2006 so far.

Albums
------
Corinne Bailey Rae charges into the #1 spot on unexpected 6 figure
sales. Ne-Yo was the only other top 20 NE, at #14.

Next Week
---------
Singles
-------
Can't see anything shifting Chico this week, alas.

Sugababes will surely be the highest NE - top 5, with MJ being the only
other top 10 NE

Top 20 : Craig David, Kanye West, Shapeshifters, Placebo
Top 30 : David Gilmour, Bow Wow
Top 40 : Fightstar, The Like, The Modern

Albums
------
No shifting Corinne, I suspect.

Highest NE - surely Shakira, top 3.

NE's - top 10 : David Gilmour, Van Morrison, Delays
Top 20 : Morning Runner

I expected it, don't know about anyone else. How many are "6 figure sales"?
Could be anything between 100,000 and 999,999.

Heard it for the first time today on R1 - big bag of shite!

Now... I know I'm gonna cop some flack for this... but I'm far from
impressed with Shakira's effort - who told her she could sing?

Looks like we're being spared a repeat of last year's Elvis shenanigans with
all these Jacko re-issues.

Has Craaaaaaaaaaig Daaaaaaaaaavid </boselecta> actually got a new single
out? I keep hearing about him appearing on various chat shows, but the
single has so far passed me by - this might not be a bad thing.

> Top 30 : David Gilmour, Bow Wow

Bow Wow... didn't they do "Wild In The Country" about 20 years ago?!

Unfortunately I won't know the exact figure until later today - but I
was only expecting her to sell about 50k.

The millions of people who've bought her records? :)

Where she really scores though is with her lyrics.

Grin. That would be Bow Wow Wow though - I had a thing for Annabel Lwin

That was Bow Wow Wow. This Bow Wow is entirely different.

Nope, but they're not taking up the No. 1 spot week after week (though I
agree stopping altogether would be a bonus, especially on anything
post-circa-1988).

Bought her new album today. As with 'Laundry Service', a great variety
of songs - it's certainly an album I'll listen to many times!

What about that change of rules to allow downloads in one week early?
Won't that cause more new entries than normal?

Yes, but that'll only apply to relatively few singles each week - I'd
have to look into how many that might be on average.

A bigger question is - will it change the release pattern of downloads,
with record companies deliberately delaying download release until 1
week before physical?

Of course, downloads that have been out for several weeks will also have
their last pre-CD-release week sales counting toward the chart.

I looked into this, and surprisingly only an average of 3 singles a week
are likely to benefit, and only 2 of those 3 to any significant extent.

And BEP to the top 20 NE's, as the new rules kick in, allowing them to
chart a week early.

Actually I've always rated her as a singer; she's distinctive at the very
least. It's just a shame about the song itself, which is just dull.

Well, he's got a single out. It sounds suspciously like 'Mandy', with
possible traces of 'If You're Not The One' though, so I'd hesitate to use
the word "new".

Are you sure you want to admit that, considering that she was only 15 when

Hey, it's not like I was dating her... :)

In any case, IIRC she looked a lot older than 15!

But when you said that you didn't know it was going to go that high. ;-)

I have to admit I didn't really believe he was going to release the single
and album in the same week, although it would now seem that he did.
And he's not exactly an obvious singles artist, so I can't imagine many
people buying it even though it was out there.
