Chart Commentary 24/5/08
Singles
-------
Another surprise #1, with the Ting Ting's taking their first (chart
eligible) single to #1.
They are also the first non X-Factor act to go to #1 with their first
chart hit in over 2 years (Duffy having had Rockferry reach #45 before
Mercy charted).
It's also the first time since 11/3/06 that both the top 2 have been new
entries (though on 2/11/07, Leona's 'Keep Bleeding' was new, and Take
That's 'Rule The World' climbed from #46 to #2).
New Entries/New Peaks
---------------------
Top 10 : Rihanna #2
Top 20 : Duffy (WA) #13, Pigeon Detectives #14, Nelly #16, Gabriella
Cilmi #19 :)
Top 30 : Sara Bareilles #23, Ashlee Simpson #26, Santogold #27, Taio
Cruz #30
Top 40 : Royworld #35, Lil Wayne #39, FOB ft JM #40
Re-entries T40 : none
New Entries outside the top 40 (plus new peaks) : Cure #48, Neil Diamond
#49, Vampire Weekend #52, Hot Chip #53, Gusto #54, Paramore #55, Sandi
Thom #59, Madonna (GI2M) #60, Chanelle Hayes #63, David Jordan #68
Re-entries : Snap (RIAD) #71, Rihanna (U) #73, Pendulum (BS) #74
Albums
------
Another big surprise this week, as Neil Diamond claims only his 2nd #1
album (the previous one being in 1992) - and his first with a studio
album.
New Entries/New Peaks
---------------------
Top 10 : Pendulum #2, Jay Sean #6, Frank Sinatra #10,
Top 20 : Searchers #11, Iron Maiden #14, Bobby Vee #18
New outside the top 20 : Josh Groban #22, Death Cab For Cutie #24,
Santogold #26, Moby #28, Martha Wainwright #29, Dan Le Sac v Scroobius
Pip #31, Flight Of The Conchords #32, Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
#38, Charlatans #39, Bon Iver #43, Will.I.Am #68
Re-entries : Kelly Rowland #23, Pendulum (HYC) #41
Next Week
---------
Singles
-------
I'm much more confident in my pick this week - Rihanna, as the CD is out
this week.
Top 5 :
Top 10 : Duffy (WA), Morrissey, Nelly/Fergie
Top 20 : Andy Abraham, Ashlee Simpson, Futureheads, Royworld, Sara
Bareilles, Ne-Yo
Top 30 : Sandi Thom, Taio Cruz
Top 40 : Amy McDonald, Gusto
Depending on download availability : Alphabeat, Zutons
Any other possibilities?
Albums
------
The Ting Ting's look the best bet for #1 in a relatively quiet week for
new releases.
Top 10 NE : Hucknall
Top 20 NE : Beth Rowley
Others : Hall & Oates, Osmonds, Sparks, Thea Gilmore

In the beginning there was "My Sharona" which begat "No Good Advice" which
begat "That's Not My Name"...
Did you go to Sunday School Paul? :)
It's a good record, although I'm also surprised it went to number 1, but
it makes a nice change from the usual stuff that tops the charts.

So was I, but I'm glad it kept that insipid Rihanna record from the top,
at least for a week.

I thought their previous, 'banned' record was better, though.

At least I assume this is their first, since AFAIK there weren't any
others before 'Great DJ'.

Which is a bit of a scary statistic, really.

New to the Top 40, then.

Had this gone all the way, she would have deposed Madonna with a song
that shares its title with a previous Madonna hit. Buut she didn't.

Parts of this remind me of the slow bit at the beginning of 'Take Me
Out'. But without the good fast bit afterwards.

Clearly unharmed by the association with that awfule movie, then.

Fortunately, I haven't heard this all the way through either.
> Re-entries T40 : none

The first of a monthly series of singles, leading up to a new album in
September - but if even this one can't reach the Top 40, the remaining
three have no realistic chance. Whether Robert Smith cares I don't
know.
> Neil Diamond
> #49,
Considering this download-only release coincided with the album,
that's - ahem - pretty amazing.
>Vampire Weekend #52,
Is this download-only? Either way, it seems to be outperforming the
previous effort, possibly because they've been in the UK.
>Hot Chip #53,
Following up a Top Ten single, but this seems to have gone out pretty
much unnoticed.

Out (again) on CD today.

Release a single with no B-sides about a year after the album and...
'That's What You Get'.
> Sandi
> Thom #59,
Out today.
> Chanelle Hayes #63,
Yes, it's another single release by a Big Brother contestant, several
months after anyone cared. Needless to say, any record company you've
heard of has already learned its lesson.
> David Jordan #68
Releases a single called 'Move On'. And it looks like everyone has.
> Re-entries : Snap (RIAD) #71,
That's as serious as, er, a not-very-good record recharting just
because it's in some stupid advert.
> Pendulum (BS) #74
Oh come on, it's not that bad! ;-)
> Albums
> ------
> Another big surprise this week, as Neil Diamond claims only his 2nd #1

A big surprise to some people, maybe.
What might be more surprising is that this is also his first US Number
One album. It's another collaboration with production legend Rick
Rubin, who seems to have picked on Diamond as a substitute for Johnny
Cash, though it doesn't seem to suit him as well - maybe because
Diamond is more instinctively Showbiz than Cash.
A deluxe version adds a DVD and two extra tracks: one of them is 'Make
You Feel My Love', that song's third appearance on a Top 10 album is
seven months.
> New Entries/New Peaks
> ---------------------
> Top 10 : Pendulum #2,
The sequel to one of the most successful Drum N Bass albums of all
time, In Silico mashes up elements of dance, industrial, prog, metal
and, er, not very good singing.
> Jay Sean #6,
Second album from the homegrown R&B star, who seems to be heading for
some sort of cult status.
> Frank Sinatra #10,
Nothing But The Best seems a daring title for an album that includes
'Somethin' Stupid' and the "wrong" version of 'Come Fly With Me', but
this is a solid retrospective of his Reprise years.
A limited edition adds a live DVD.
> Top 20 : Searchers #11, Iron Maiden #14, Bobby Vee #18
I can only assume that these three compilations are somehow targetted
at the Father's Day market, since they're not obviously topical in any
other way and there certainly have been previous collections for all
of these acts.
Indeed, the Maiden album only covers the years 1980-89, which
presumably means we'll be getting subsequent volumes to cover the next
two decades. Unusually for a full-price compilation, some of the
tracks are live versions.
> New outside the top 20 : Josh Groban #22,
With the perhaps not-accurately-titled Awake Live, which I'm slightly
surprised to see in the album chart as there's a lot more DVD than CD
here.
> Death Cab For Cutie #24,
Second hit album for them, although I think it's about their eighth in
total.
The digital version of the album includes a 7" edit of the single 'I
Will Possess Your Heart' and a bonus track of somebody reading out all
the sleeve credits.
> Moby #28,
A month after digital release, as the physical was postponed to awit
somebody noticing he was still around.
> Martha Wainwright #29,
The only member of her family to appear on a Top 40 single, albeit not
alone, returns with the album I Know You're Married But I Have
Feelings Too.
Wainwright herself is now married, but I still don't think she's much
of a singer. And there was no need to cover 'See Emily Play'.
>Dan Le Sac v Scroobius
> Pip #31,
Busy week, isn't it?
Another much-anticipated debut, including the hit 'Thou Shalt Always
Kill', the less successful 'Beat That My Heart Skipped' and 'Look For
The Woman' and the Radiohead-sampling freebie 'Open Letter From God To
Man'.
>Flight Of The Conchords #32,
New Zealand comedy duo with a set of songs from their (in-character)
TV series. Like the Moby record, this has been out on MP3 for some
weeks, although how many it's actually sold that way I don't know.
> Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
> #38,
Which if I remember correctly is exactly where their previous album as
a duo ended up. It's actually Lanegan's second chart album this year,
as he's also part of The Gutter Twins; neither he nor Campbell has
managed to chart with any solo albums though.
>Charlatans #39,
Their lowest-charting studio album ever, presumably because it was
(and AFAIK still is) available as a free download. And Alan McGee's
brilliant strategy of giving it away in partnership with a radio
station is a great way to ensure that nobody else will give it any
airplay.
Now, contrary to the original plan, it's out on vinyl, CD or a double
CD with a couple of extra outtakes and live tracks - or you can pay to
download it, if you want.
> Bon Iver #43,
Bad French for "Good Winter", which may have seemed more appropriate
as the week wore on.
He's really Justin Vernon, who recorded this entirely alone while
living in a lgo cabin in Wisconsin.
>Will.I.Am #68
Two hit singles and the frontman of one of the world's biggest bands
still can't get his album into the Top 60!
> Re-entries : Kelly Rowland #23,
This is the new deluxe version of the album, which seems to dump the
majority of the original disc in favour of the remix of 'Work', the
current single 'Daylight' and some other new tracks. Maybe she should
have gone for broke and released an entirely new album.

Considering that the more-ballyhooed 'Run' barely scraped the Top 75,
I don't think the has much chance of selling as a single. It's
obviously all about the album now.

Great DJ? I've not heard it myself, but I've noticed another of
their tracks is used on the new iPod advert so I reckon their
album will definitely go to No. 1.

Depends on the question, in a way - if they hadn't given it away for
free, that would have made it eligible but might also have affected
sales one way or the other.

It'd still have been a more interesting story if they were Number Ones
though. And it would also have made Rihanna the first person to have
two download-only Number Ones (in terms of releases, of course).

I'm not particularly interested in hardcore (or any other type of

was pretty big and he's had massive promotion. Plus it was released
sooner.

Not all of them, obviously, but some who might have been persuaded
wouldn't. Especially since the original plan was not to release it
physically at all, so they'd have had to direct people to a rival
station's website in order to obtain the music.

Well, you can see the commercial value of having the hit version of
'Work' on an album. But they didn't exactly strike while the iron was

Given the minimal competition, I'm confident it would have, anyway.
Of course, their 2007 Glastonbury appearance probably helped them more
than anything else.

It depends whether a chart appearance would have gotten it heard by more
people than giving it away. Either way, it sees to have worked out for

late, whereas the gap was only a few days in this instance.

I can - not that I needed to anyway - but there's no way in the Google

Unless he does it really badly! And of course there's only going to be
a few hours left by then.
Interesting to see whether any of the others get anywhere this year.

ND's single 'Petty Amazing' got to #28 on airplay with just 49 spins (as
opposed to the 500-ish it usually takes to reach that level), so that
should tell you a *lot* about who is/isn't playing it...

Info :
Rihanna will re-release her multi-platinum third album with a
double-disc deluxe edition package titled Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded.
The set will include seven from the twelve original tracks, four new
tracks with the lead U.S. number one single "Take a Bow", a remix of "If
I Never See Your Face Again" with Maroon 5 and a DVD containing concert
footage from her Manchester concert, a documentary and a home movie made
by Rihanna's band. The revamped version of the album will be released in
stores on June 17, 2008.[11][12] The album will be released June 2, 2008
in the UK. [13]

With only 7 of the original 12 tracks left, it's sales can't be combined
with the original version because of the 80% rule.

I presume they would (unless the label had decided otherwise for some
reason) but whether it'd actually sell enough will be interesting to
see.

I don't think they're part of the panel that contributes to airplay
stats. There'd be no point because, unlike the BBC, they don't really
bother with mainstream music programming - for example, this is the
schedule we get here:

There used to be a preview butoon which was good if you wanted to
pause and look something up or whatever, but that no longer exists. I
ended up haveing to work on a text file and paste it in.

OK, so one of the highlights is a remix of a flop Maroon 5 single?

I suppose not. I wonder why they're doing that?

And if you've seen the Thursday mids, you'll know the answer to that. :)
Listed as T40 this week, though I suspect it's probably been selling
enough for that position all along, only there's been no way to tell.
It's #58 on YTD sales per this week's ChartsPlus - clearly not enough to
have been #1, but almost certainly to have gone T10 - maybe even T5.

No idea.
I wonder if Kylie's record company will jump on the 'special edition'
bandwagon? I don't recall seeing one from her before, but YNK...
A previously-unreleased single for the Autumn market would surely sell
well, and adding that to an album SE might revive it for the Xmas
market.

Depending on the rate at which it sold those downloads, of course.
Mind you, if they'd been eligible then the label might have been more
inclined to release a eligible physical version too.

Oh yeah, there are - but they're still unlistenably awful so I don't
bother.

Actually, on reflection I'm not sure that M5 track has flopped yet - I
was confusing it with 'When Will I See Your Face Again' by Jamie Scott
& The Town, which sounds exactly like Maroon 5. It might even have
been a hit if it'd come out while they were still popular.

You'd think if they were going to do that much new material, they
might has well stretch it to a whole new album. You'd think they'd
sell more of that.
Having said that, though, I don't know whether the 80% rule applies
over here, so perhaps they'll be combined on Billboard... not that
you'd think this album needed the extra sales anyway.
> I wonder if Kylie's record company will jump on the 'special edition'

I'm pretty sure there was a limited version of the one with 'Spinning
Around' on it (Light Years?) but that was just remixes, rather than
new songs.

I wonder whether EMI are thinking that too?
The only problem is that the album will be a year old by then.

Your comment did have me slightly puzzled - I've seen a video for it,
which suggests a singles release, but I have no info on a date for that.

That's not an unusual span for the release of a special edition, though.
Besides, any brand new Kylie single would surely go top 5 at very worst
- and providing it was better than 2 Hearts, would have a fair shot at
#1.

Don't forget that in the US, all DJs sound like Steve Wright. Well,
apart from the accent obviously.

Well, I obviously don't know in detail, because I'm not listening to
them - but there are stations that play hideous overproduced "rock"
music and ones that play hideous overproduced "country" music.
Presumably there are MOR stations too, but I've mostly avoided them.
That said, my localised experience isn't all that relevant because
this is a very sparsely populated area, so in terms of listenership
it's very much a drop in the ocean. Still, Leona Lewis and Sara
Bareilles are both in the "Hot" airplay Top 10 so somebody's obviously
hearing them.
As an aside, even in the UK I find it very hard to work out what local
radio is on offer, so over here I'm pretty much stumped.

For the M5/Rihanna thing? Presumably, in the UK at least, it's being
held back until 'Take A Bow' has had its day.

It's not, but there's always the risk that it will have been entirely
forgotten by then.

In which case they might be better off using it to launch a new
record.

At least it *does* get you away from Eurovision though - not

But since she's now touring, she won't have time to record a whole new

I didn't actually, although there presumably is some of that - I sort
of imagined that the stations who play that play more oldies.
I was thinking of folk like Simple Plan.
