> Sean Kingston #1, as expected.
One of those records that arrives at the top carrying so many people's
opinions that it's hard to add much to the discussion.
One thing I've spotted is that this record is over four minutes long, which
is surely not called for.
> New Entries/Climbers
> --------------------
> Top 10 : Plain Whit T's #3,
Making a lunge for "most accurately named chart act of 2007", and also for
laziest B-side (the same song without the string arrangements!).
Another one that's been around for so long that it seems a bit late to
express an opinion. Let's predict that it's going to hang around for ages,
and that they'll never have another hit on this scale.
> Rihanna #5,
This is starting to feel like Pick Of The Pops.
What could be mistaken for her attempt to go country. Although I hadn't
noticed this until it was pointed out, this samples Orgy's regrettable cover
version of 'Blue Monday' which may become New Order's last writing credit on
a hit single.
> Freaks #9,
Not the Beatfreakz, or Lovefreeks, or any of the many other charting Freaks.
In a common story for a dance record, it was originally an instrumental club
hit but had a vocal dubbed onto it for commercial reasons.
>James Blunt #10
Out tomorrow on CDs and 7".
> Top 20 : Elvis #14,
A record that has, believe it or not, been around even longer than the
Rihanna one. ;-)
'Hound Dog' was originally written and produced by the legendary Lieber &
Stoller for blues singer Big Momma Thornton, although Elvis based his
recording on a gender-changed and slightly sanitised version by Freddie
Bell. Also on this re-issue is the original US A-side 'Don't Be Cruel' (one
of Presley's few writing credits) and a third track from the session 'Any
Way You Want Me'. Elvis apparently produced these tracks, although he's
uncredited.
The reissue uses the original US artwork, and no I don't know why the dog is
wearing a top hat.
>Kano/Craig David #18,
Perhaps the most notable thing about this record is that even though Craig
David is only really a backing singer here, the record company are evidently
pushing this as a way to relaunch his solo career. Kano, meanwhile, remains
the only act to have a hit on Mike Skinner's hopeless The Beats label, but
in his couple of years off seems to have suffered a nasty bout of Foreign
Accent Syndrome.
> Scouting For Girls #19
Out tomorrow on CD and 7"s.
> Top 30 : KT Tunstall #21,
Lead single from her second album proper, and seemingly the victim of album
sales as it's sold only respectably despite major airplay success. It's a
very likeable record, despite that odd rubber-band solo at the start.
> Natalie Imbruglia #23,
Almost exactly ten years after her chart debut, her ninth hit heralds a
compilation album.
Somewhat surprisingly, 'Glorious' is co-written and produced by Crispin
Hunt, who used to be a member of the Longpigs alongside Richard Hawley.
> Reverend & The Makers #30
Out tomorrow on CD & 7".
> Top 40 : Athlete #31,
Trailing their imminent third album, and unfortunately for them also
trailing the chart position of the lead single from their last one to the
tune of 26 places. Was it really wise for an act who've usually had trouble
selling singles to put this out as a two-track CD in a card sleeve?
It's possibly the most lyrically intriguing song in the chart, but seems to
find them out of their depth musically.
> Maroon 5 #33,
Just the 31 places lower than their last one got, then.
Possibly having this and their mini-me Jamie Scott releasing records in the
same week cancelled each other out.
>Twang #34,
"Near the flower grows a weed, and not the kind you smoke," they
sing/mumble. Re-recorded from the album, not that it seems to have helped
sales much.
>Armand Van Helden #38
Out tomorrow.
> New outside the top 40 : Jamie Scott #41,
Irritating singer-songwriter who was dropped by his previous label after a
couple of minor hits in 2004-5, but has been given a second bite of the
cherry thanks to the Morrisons and Nutinis of this world. Even though he
admits to being influenced by Jamiroquai.
> P Diddy #50,
Haven't heard this. Apparently the B-side "mixes deep house cheekiness with
a Hip-Hop sensibility, creating a vibe that transcends both."
>Ultrabeat #52,
And Darren Styles - together at last.
> P,B&J #56,
Seemingly a re-entry at this point, although a full-scale reissue is
scheduled for the 17th.
> Dave Spoon #57,
> Girls Aloud #64,
Out tomorrow on CDs. What was the point of releasing it on download two days
early?
> Editors #73,
Out tomorrow on CDs & 7"
> Proclaimers #74
Which, technically, makes this one of the least successful follow-ups to a
Number One from an established act.
> Albums
> ------
> NE's (top 20) : Super Furry Animals #11
Eighth studio album from the Welsh indie legends, and their first on an
actual indie label in a few years. It has still mananged to chart higher
than their last major-label disc, Love Kraft, which the band apparently now
regard as a mistake.
Apparently this is supposed to be a concept album.
> New outside the top 20 : Ringo Starr #26,
Liverpudlian singer Richard Starkey, who apparently used to be in a band or
something.
But seriously folks, Photograph is his first proper compilation since 1975
and now his first UK chart album since the previous year. It includes all
six of his charting singles, plus the surprise US hit 'Wrack My Brain', the
George Harrison tribute 'Never Without You' and other favourites.
This week also saw the digital release of his EMI albums, which leaves only
George unrepresented on the download sites.
>Joe Bonamassa #50,
Blues-rock guitarist who's made quite a name for himself among fans of the
genre.
> Atreyu #61,
Californian metal act with their first album for Roadrunner, their fourth in
all.
> Paul Van Dyk #63
Veteran trance producer, whose new album includes vocals from (among others)
David Byrne and one of the other Pussycat Dolls.
> Next Week
> ---------
> Singles
> -------
> A straight fight between James Blunt & Girls Aloud for #1 this week, which
> I expect the former to win fairly comfortably.
I'm not even sure if it qualifies as a fight, TBH. Strictly speaking, I
don't feel able to make a definitive pronouncement until I've seen the sales
figures.
> Top 10 : Girls Aloud, Scouting For Girls
Neat little coincidence. I don't really know why this Scouting record is
doing so much better than their last one, but it's obviously going to
continue doing so.
> Top 20 : Editors,
Sounds about the right level.
>Elvis,
Again, this seems to be where they're landing this year.
It's 'Teddy Bear'. I think.
>Reverend & the Makers
Of course the last one peaked confusingly late, but in any case this one
doesn't seem to have been as well-received.
> Top 30 : Interpol,
I was wondering about this one. It seems to have been more of a radio hit
than the last one and they're making more of an effort on the B-sides, but
it is still coming out after the album, so it would unlikely to sell *more*.
But then the second and third ones from their previous effort did, so who
knows?
>Rooney
Another one I didn't know where to go with - the BBC stations have only
played it sporadically without much obvious enthusiasm, but I imagine that
commerical stations are really hammering it.
> Top 40 : Go Team,
Their last one flopped monumentally, though.
> MIMS
I've not noticed any promo at all for this (I couldn't even tell you what it
was called without looking it up), and I'm not sure if the previous one was
really big enough to inspire the typical follow-up hit. But it's a bit
outside my area.
> Any other possibilities?
Well, Armand Van Helden is already in the Top 40, so will presumably climb a
bit. The Rumble Strips have, not undeservedly, made a habit of near-misses,
but the new one is in a film. And it says here that there's going to be a
Dance X single, but I don't even know how that's possible.
> Albums
> ------
> Hard-Fi look like the most obvious candidate for #1
Absolutely.
> Top 20 NE : Athlete,
Agreed. Possibly Top 10, although it's clearly not going to be another
Number One for them.
>Sean Kingston
Why not the Plain White Ts then?
Also, the "Festival Edition" of the Paolo Nutini album may drive it a few
places upwards.

Or why Paul bothered to create the charts grouip in the first place when

I can't put OT in the title without it also appearing in groups where it
isn't OT, though.

OK that was a very predictable comment, but this urban singles chart

I should imagine that's true in most other parts of the world too.
But you can't really sell this record on the basis of David's contribution,
and it seems more like they're trying to sell him on the basis of the
record. Which of course doesn't say much for the current state of his
career!

The notion of it ultimately hitting the Top 20 wasn't a staggering one for

much even on physicals, it's remarkable how far this has gone.

It's not a very attention-grabbing record though, is it? I mean, it's all
pretty competent and will presumably do its job of drawing attention to the
Singles album, but it's not the sort of thing that I can imagine inspiring
people to rush out and buy.

Of course not - that's why the lead singer is doing faceless co-writes for
people like Natalie! No disrespect to her, but Kelly Jones doesn't have to
do that sort of thing.
Anyway, I was amused by the coincidence of two of them simulantaneously
making an impact in the charts in such different ways.

It already has! Obviously not in terms of chart position, yet, but it's been

FWIW, Tourist sold 83k to enter at the top. However, I'd forgetten that

IIRC that link is to the original video, which I'd never seen until it was
on there. If anyone's wondering, Crispin Hunt was the lead singer and
Richard Hawley was the one with the quiff avoiding the camera.
Personally, I think it's a bit of a shame that's the only song they're
remembered for, but that first album is one of the lost classics of British
rock.

Again, though, that's surely a reason to avoid releasing it in advance at
all.
Perhaps it's some paranoia about piracy - the version they originally sent
to radio seems to have been in mono.

They did, although in fairness to them they were in a tougher market.

The picture on the sleeve is from Elvis' performance of the song on
the Steve Allen show on July 1st, 1956. Steve Allen thought it would
be funny to put Elvis in a tux and have him sing the song to a basset
hound in a top hat. It was also an attempt to tone down and "class-up"
Elvis' appearance after the furor over his suggestive performance on
the Milton Berle show the previous month. Elvis later described it as
''the most ridiculous performance of my entire career.''
Incidentally, Presley's writing credit on "Don't Be Cruel" was one of
Colonel Parker's typical machinations to get more money for Presley
(and himself.) Despite what the credits say, the song was written
entirely by Otis Blackwell.

Talking about tougher markets, I see Katie Melua's only real competition
on the 1st Oct will be the Stereophonics.
While their last 4 albums did go to #1, they were all released in spring
or summer, presumably against relatively weak opposition - I think
they'll find Katie Melua's fanbase far more formidable.
Checking up, the 'Phonics last album sold 106k, though that was backed
up by a #1 single - and the lead single this time is weaker. I'd guess
that Katie will shift closer to 150k first week, though.
Mind you, given the usual sales patterns - rock sales very front-loaded,
with MOR slower but steadier - I dare say the Stereophonics may start
the week ahead, but get pulled back towards the weekend.

Thanks for that.

I did deliberately choose the word "credit" there to indicate that. I notice
that it's claimed on the Wikipedia entry that Presley's credit could be
justified by his contributions as an arranger, but somebody has added the
"Citation Needed" tag there! I didn't know, but suspected that the Colonel
insisted on it for the sake of his percentage.

I heard another one today, which I thought was alright, but possibly lacking
the qualities of her debut.

Yes, but they'd cost EMI even less.
It's not really about the money, of course. It's about the way it seems so
penny-pinching of them. And even if you did put it in a box, there's be no
title on the spine...

Are you sure about that? HMV says the 15th
There are quite a few big releases that are likely to breach the Top 10
(Springsteen, Babyshambles, Lennox, Penate) but I agree that none of them is
a very likely chart topper.

It certainly is - although it's not necessarily any weaker than 'Madam
Helga', and the album (presumably) also includes 'Bank Holiday Monday'.

Than what? She only sold 120k last time.

I'd rip them straight to MP3 anyway, so that'd be irrelevant.

That makes no sense, with the single due out on the 24th Sep.

I suspect there will be considerable jockeying for position during the
week, with Babyshambles especially being muscled aside towards the
weekend...

IMO that was due to second-album nerves on the part of her fans, but now
she has proven she wasn't a one-hit-wonder.
BTW, she debuted at #77 on airplay this week, albeit on just 20 spins
(mostly on R2, presumably).

Yeah, but if I wanted 'Hurricane' on MP3 I could have bought it for less and
two weeks earlier.
Like I said, it's not really about the practicalities of the thing.

Can I just clarify that it's the Stereophonics album that HMV have listed
for the 15th?

I can't rule it out, obviously, but it's not the way things tend to go. Has
the second album sold more than the first?

Presumably, although I don't *think* I've heard it as often this week as
last.

Going off at a tangent, does anyone else like the single 'Bubbly' by
Colbie Caillat?
IMO she sounds like a white Corinne Baillie Rae.

most of the audience would be from R2 but she's only at #19 on R2's
airplay chart - up from #35 - so I doubt it had more than a small
handful of plays on that station, perhaps 5 or so. Most would still be
from some small local station somewhere.

Ah, that makes more sense - I guess Ms Melua must be more intimidating
than she appears. :)

Not really a fair comparison, since one has been out 2 years longer than
the other. All I know is they've both sold over 1 million.

The video seems to be getting daily plays on VH1 though, and possibly
other channels - though I can't be sure as my neighbour has some
scaffolding up which is screwing up the Sky signal on some channels.

But she's A-listed, which means 20 plays a week - and AIUI DJ's have no
choice but to play such singles if they are told to.

20 plays on R2 would be enough to place a song inside the top 30, though
of course this would depend on whether those plays were all during daytime.
