Yeah, it was never really in contention this week, which is presumably why
even JK & J didn't pretend to be excited about it. At least we got to hear
the Jay-Z version this time around.
Still makes for a bit of a boring chart though, and without many big new
physicals I suspect sales haven't been great this week. Which might account
for all the rebounders.
> New Entries/Climbers
> --------------------
> Top 10 : Hellogoodbye #4, Mutya #9
Only one newcomer to the Top 10 and that was last week's Number 11
> Top 20 : Pigeon Detectives #12,
'I'm Not Sorry'? Maybe they should be.
Third Top 40 hit for the Yorkshiremen. Not the worst thing they've ever
done, but still a band I find exceedingly charmless.
>R Kelly #18,
A three-word song title that begins 'I'm A...' What a temptation!
It seems fair to say that he no longer has the profile he had even a few
years ago, perhaps because his place seems to have been taken by Ne-Yo, at
least musically.
>Kaiser Chiefs #19,
Outsold by their protegees this week, albeit not in a fair fight, and only
four places ahead of their months-old 'Ruby'. This is now their smallest hit
since the original release of 'I Predict A Riot' in 2004.
Isn't 'Everything Is Average Nowadays' rather a fate-tempting title? The
song has a tiny bit more substance to it than 'Ruby', and there's some nice
lyrical imagery in the chorus, but it hardly compares with their best
material.
>Dizzee Rascal #20
It's four years now since he won the Mercury Prize, and about two-and-a-half
since the rather dubious 'Dream' that was supposed to make him into a
mainstream star, but if anything had the opposite effect.
Now he's back with the first single from his third album, but whether by
accident or design it's been a bit lower-key this time. In that context a
Top 20 hit is actually quite an achievement.
Interestingly, the album is to be a digital-only release in the US.
BTW, I presume you've given up capitalising new entries.
> Top 40 : Twang #33,
Out tomorrow on CD & 7"s.
>Reverend & The makers #38
Also on physicals tomorrow, as we know.
> New outside the top 40 : Lloyd #66,
Out tomorrow on CD & 12".
*69: Bone Thugs N Harmony featuring Akon - because there obviously wasn't
enough Akon in the charts already.
*70: The Rolling Stones - This is the superb 'Paint It, Black', the sixth of
their eight UK chart-toppers, which perhaps surprisingly only managed a
single week at the top in 1966.
It also reached 61 as a re-issue in 1990.
>Tim Deluxe #71,
Featuring Simon Franks from the Audiobullys, but despite the big dance hits
they've had in the past not many people seem to have been interested.
> Bonde Do Role #75
I wasn't actually expecting this to stay in the Top 75, so I gave away most
of what I knew in the midweeks thread.
Apparently it's pronounced "bonge de her-lay".
> Albums
> ------
> Maroon 5 relieve their disappointment at missing out on the singles #1, by
> topping the album chart instead.
Inevitably so. I actually forgot to predraft anything about this album,
which probably sums it up.
It's almost exactly five years since Songs About Jane was initially released
in the US apparently.
> NE's (top 20) : Sophie Ellis Bextor 7,
Long-awaited third solo album, featuring collaborations with former B-52
Fred Schneider and bandmate-in-law Dan Gillespie Sells.
After the seemingly fumbled single release, this album has got off to a good
start. I wonder how it will do from here on?
You don't need me to tell you that the single hasn't really fallen 19
places, do you?
>Ozzy Osbourne #8,
Easy as it is to forget, Ozzy Osbourne used to be famous for making records,
but this is his first new one in six years. At least it is if you ignore the
covers album he released in 2005, which is probably a good idea.
It's his first Top 10 solo set since The Ultimate Sin in 1986, for some
reason.
> Cribs #13,
"Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever" is an awful title for an album, even
one that includes tracks called 'Men's Needs' and 'Women's Needs'.
It's the third album from the brothers Jarman, recorded largely in Canada
for some reason, produced by Alex Kapranos and featuring a guest monologue
from Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ronaldo. Commercially, it's a big
breakthrough, their first-ever Top 75 album.
> Hellogoodbye #17
So what have they got that Gym Class Heroes haven't, I wonder?
According to a review in The Fly, there are "moments where you want to kick
the door down, eat it, and shit door-knobs and sawdust all over the place."
> New outside the top 20 : Erasure #29,
Recorded, it says here, at a private home in Maine. But it doesn't say
whose.
A limited edition CD includes two additional tracks.
> Used #39
Serious-minded Utah rock band with their third album.
They collaborated with My Chemical Romance on a charity cover of 'Under
Pressure' in 2005.
> (I don't have positions above #40 yet)
I shan't detain you with all 35 of them, but here are a few highlights:
46: SUPERTRAMP - Re-releasing 2005's oddly successful Retrospectacle on the
back of the Gym Class Heroes hit.
It now seems to be available as a single CD as well as the original double.
(53) Regina Spektor re-enters
(54) Take That's Ultimate Collection, currently £5 in Woolworths.
(55) Klaxons, now £4 there. At that price even I had to buy it!
56: CANDIE PAYNE - One of her brothers used to the lead singer of The
Stands, and another is the drummer in the Zutons. Now Candie Payne releases
an album of her own, in something of retro style.
57: THE NATIONAL - Not the same band as Grand National, but a moody US indie
act much beloved by Uncut magazine.
This is in fact their fourth album, presumably gaining from the good reviews
affording to this and their previous disc Alligator.
(69) Modest Mouse. I think this might be on special offer somewhere too, and
there's a 7" out tomorrow.
Worth noting, BTW, that Chris Cornell seems to have missed the Top 75 with
the follow-up to his Top 10 single.
> Next Week
> ---------
> Singles
> -------
> Rihanna should increase her lead even further, now that her CD is out.
Pretty much inevitable. It might be interesting to see how well this does on
physicals though.
> Top 10 : Mutya (duh). :)
Could well go as high as 2, given the fairly light competition.
> Top 20 : Marilyn Manson,
Maybe, although I do get the impression that interest in him has long since
peaked.
>MIMS,
41 on downloads in case anybody missed it.
> Scissor Sisters,
That would be quite a turnaround from where 'She's My Man' went, and this is
a less obviously "them" single. It's not even the most popular of their
songs on download this week, and I don't think they're a massive physicals
act.
>Twang
Will probably at least flirt with the Top 10. Hasn't done quite as well on
downloads as I expected though.
> Top 30 : Kim Sozzy,
Had to Google this one, which isn't usually a good sign. It's spelt "Sozzi"
apparently.
I notice that HMV list it as a Cascada Remix though, so all bets are off.
> LCD Soundsystem,
Looking at his past track record, I wouldn't always have agreed, but the
Franz factor might help him out.
>Reverend & The Makers,
On the basis of that download position they'll probably beat this.
>Simply Red
As I suggested re: the mids, it's difficult to know whether the surge in
album sales in the last couple of weeks (off the back of their London shows)
really indicates a growth in their market that could help the single or is
taking sales away from it. Realistically, though, I can't imagine it going
Top 30.
> Top 40 : Armand Van Helden,
Already at 45 on downloads, which implies that it could become his biggest
hit in a while.
>Freeform Five,
A name that seems to have been around for a while, but I don't think I've
heard the record.
> Omarion,
Certainly not a challenger for Number One, as nobody's bothering to download
it, R&B Anthem though it may be.
>Rogue Traders
They still around then?
Also, Tiny Dancers went Top 40 last time and have had a sort of radio hit
now. Novelty record warning: The Zimmers have their own documentary on BBC 2
tomorrow night.
> Albums
> ------
> Maroon 5 should hold on at #1.
Difficult to dispute that.
> Top 20 NE : Bob Sinclar,
But his last album had loads of hits on it and never even made the Top 75.
>Infernal,
Not a suggestion I'd even have entertained before Cascada of course.
Now it does seem possible, but it's hard not to think that the UK release
has been left a bit late - it's almost a year since the big single.
> Pigeon Detectives,
Yeah.
> R Kelly,
Probably, although he has an odd-shaped career.
> Ross Copperman
I doubt it, after the single flopped.
Meanwhile, though, Jeff Buckley's record company are cashing in o- sorry,
commemorating, the tenth anniversary of his demise with a compilation album,
although it's difficult to see who needs that.

choice if they want a physical format.

Like I said, that was the US release date (June 2002, apparently). It didn't
make it over here for a while, and didn't really trouble the UK chart until
2004.

Even when he was at the peak of his fame, he only had one of those, and that
was a cover version, so it's totally off the agenda IMO.
That said, I noticed when I looked it up last night that he's had more Top

Large number of old people who've done a cover version of 'My Generation' to

Not much choice, but that leaves open the question of how many people
actually do want a physical copy of that song. Minus the people who wanted
it enough to pay £2:99 but not £10:99 or however much the album goes for.

Roughly 3 years since the UK release (debut single 'Harder to Breathe' was
released Jan 2004 over here, it all went downhill from there). Is he still
whining about his ex-girlfriend in all the songs then?

Perhaps that should be the case, but you know full well it isn't. And in any
case, all the Rogue Traders songs are reworkings of existing ones.

Or even derivative ones?
No, they are a bit older, but it's a good point - they're not Pete
Townsend's generation but it isn't exactly current material.

A chart without any covers/samples etc, i.e. containing *only* original
material, might be interesting... :)

I had in mind things like the Rolling Stones this week - it doesn't really
seem sensible to count that as a re-entry of the 1966 or 1991 versions. But
you could do that with a single that went 68-79-74, even if the physicals
were deleted.

Interesting to see, but not necessarily musically.

Hmm... well, it certainly wouldn't make sense to associate it with the 1991
release, because most of the people downloading it this time probably don't
even know that happened. You might associate it with the 1966 original, but
even that doesn't quite seem to fit the bill. Especially since the current
Guinness format would just show this as an eleventh week with a little (RE)
after it.

No. I suppose at a pinch you could argue for it to be a re-mix. ;-)
Mind you, the point's slightly moot as by most accounts there won't be a
Guinness book this year anyway.

> Next Week
> ---------
> Singles

Also, Tiny Dancers went Top 40 last time and have had a sort of radio hit
now. Novelty record warning: The Zimmers have their own documentary on BBC 2
tomorrow night.

But if the latest single isn't out on CD, then fans won't have much
choice if they want a physical format.

Even when he was at the peak of his fame, he only had one of those, and that

Not much choice, but that leaves open the question of how many people
actually do want a physical copy of that song. Minus the people who wanted
it enough to pay £2:99 but not £10:99 or however much the album goes for.

Roughly 3 years since the UK release (debut single 'Harder to Breathe' was
released Jan 2004 over here, it all went downhill from there). Is he still
whining about his ex-girlfriend in all the songs then?

I had in mind things like the Rolling Stones this week - it doesn't really
seem sensible to count that as a re-entry of the 1966 or 1991 versions. But
you could do that with a single that went 68-79-74, even if the physicals
were deleted.

Hmm... well, it certainly wouldn't make sense to associate it with the 1991
release, because most of the people downloading it this time probably don't
even know that happened.

Yeah, it was never really in contention this week, which is presumably why
even JK & J didn't pretend to be excited about it. At least we got to hear
the Jay-Z version this time around.
Still makes for a bit of a boring chart though, and without many big new
physicals I suspect sales haven't been great this week. Which might account
for all the rebounders.
> New Entries/Climbers

Only one newcomer to the Top 10 and that was last week's Number 11

I wasn't actually expecting this to stay in the Top 75, so I gave away most
of what I knew in the midweeks thread.
Apparently it's pronounced "bonge de her-lay".
> Albums

> Maroon 5 relieve their disappointment at missing out on the singles #1, by

> Next Week
> ---------
> Singles

> Albums

But if the latest single isn't out on CD, then fans won't have much
choice if they want a physical format.

Only seven places higher than their previous hit, and it's been more of a
radio success, so this isn't staggering.

I should imagine their biggest concern at the moment is working out how to
represent digital-only entries and stuff. Luckily changing the rules at the
start of a year gives them plenty of time to figure it out.

I thought that one was OK, but not really enough for either him or Sam
Obernik to make a career out of. Better than anything the Bullys ever did,
anyway.

Like I said, that was the US release date (June 2002, apparently). It didn't
make it over here for a while, and didn't really trouble the UK chart until
2004.

It's his first new album since 2001.
Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer about that, but I did say I was
excluding the cover versions.

I reckoned it was worth it for 'Golden Skans' and 'Gravity's Rainbow'. I'm
less than convinced by a lot of the rest, but at least it doesn't outstay
its welcome.

It is, but in such a week that might not be relevant. It's not as if she

Even when he was at the peak of his fame, he only had one of those, and that
was a cover version, so it's totally off the agenda IMO.
That said, I noticed when I looked it up last night that he's had more Top
20 success than I remembered, so he might well make it this time after all.

Yeah, but I sort of don't think last year's chart entry of that one counts,
as it was a re-working of an existing hit.

The record company will certainly be hoping so.
Certainly no shortage of versions out there - I counted 12 different mixes
on one download site alone.

Large number of old people who've done a cover version of 'My Generation' to
promote bingo. Seems to have attracted a lot of interest from people who
should know better.
This is the sort of cover that would tempt me to download the original if I
hadn't already got three versions of it.

Not much choice, but that leaves open the question of how many people
actually do want a physical copy of that song. Minus the people who wanted
it enough to pay £2:99 but not £10:99 or however much the album goes for.
