OT : Manic Street Preachers new single...
'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough'
Never thought I'd like an MSP single, but that has now changed! Mind
you, the guest vocals of Nina Persson (of the Cardigans) make quite a
difference.
I can see this one going top 3 easily - and more to the point, not
immediately plummeting as MSP singles usually do.

It indicates me being too busy to have got round to this thread yet.
BTW, just so this isn't a totally redundant post - why is this in the R1
group?

I'm very much of the opinion that if you've got James Dean Bradfield in your
band, you have no business letting outher people sing. Especially not Nicky
Wire.

Or at least as they have done recently. The only proviso - apart from the
fact that I think the record is not much cop - is that this might appeal to
a more AOR, non-single-buying demographic, thus limiting the length of its
run. Mind you, pre-release downloads will give this at least one extra week.

Because I thought it more likely to find MSP fans there, than on the R2
one.
It's listed for the 30th Apr, and I get the feeling they're not someone
who'll be big on downloads, so a premature appearance seems unlikely.

Two years back, pre-download, I would have agreed - but as a 'fanbase'
group who'll surely rely mostly on physical sales, they'll be at a
distinct disadvantage.

Hmm... you might want to check which radio stations have playlisted the
track, and which one has the video on its website.

Digital release is, AIUI, the 23rd, presumably because the record company
hope that they can sell it to some people twice.
Further digital variants are scheduled for the 30th.

The propenultimate word of that sentence should have been "other" if you
didn't guess. What I meant was that I consider Bradfield one of the greatest
vocalists to emerge from this country in the last 20 years or so, and thus
only letting him do half the singing is less good than letting him do all of
it. The same applies to their previous duet (quintet? quartet?) hit, 'Little
Baby Nothing'.

Something of a disadvantage, to be sure, although exactly how much remains
to be seen. Don't forget that there's at least a theorectical possibility of
them being able to sell more copies per customer this way.
That said, I think it's a significant possiblilty that this will end up
selling more (even in the first week) than 'The Love Of Richard Nixon', but
charting lower. I could revise that nearer the time, mind you.

I don't see why not - remember that as you pointed out there's a big and
loyal Manics fanbase out there. Who's to say they won't jump at the chance
to get the song a week "early"?

Because I thought it more likely to find MSP fans there, than on the R2
one.
It's listed for the 30th Apr, and I get the feeling they're not someone
who'll be big on downloads, so a premature appearance seems unlikely.

Hmm... you might want to check which radio stations have playlisted the
track, and which one has the video on its website.

Checking the release schedule, there doesn't look to be anything else
significant released physically that week, so that should counteract any
download weakness.

Or at least as they have done recently. The only proviso - apart from the
fact that I think the record is not much cop - is that this might appeal to
a more AOR, non-single-buying demographic, thus limiting the length of its
run. Mind you, pre-release downloads will give this at least one extra week.

Hmm... you might want to check which radio stations have playlisted the
track, and which one has the video on its website.

Obviously, it's a matter of opinion. But even if you don't think he's the
best singer in the country, he's certainly the best one in the Manics...

Up to a point, yes, but I'd like to see what the Top 3 are the week before,
prior to making a definitive pronouncement.

Most of the original fans are in the thirties now, they're bound to have
filled out a bit. ;-)
I think it is a sizeable enough one - remember that they had 14 Top 40
singles in 1991-94, back in the days before they got played on the radio
regularly.

Because I thought it more likely to find MSP fans there, than on the R2

It's listed for the 30th Apr, and I get the feeling they're not someone
who'll be big on downloads, so a premature appearance seems unlikely.

Hmm... you might want to check which radio stations have playlisted the
track, and which one has the video on its website.

It's mainly a musical judgment, actually.

I don't see why not - remember that as you pointed out there's a big and
loyal Manics fanbase out there. Who's to say they won't jump at the chance
to get the song a week "early"?
