Lovely line
I did like the following dialogue at the start of last night's broadcast:
Mildred: Who was that Freda he kept going on about?
Joe: Bert's Missus, that is.
Mildred: Oh, that makes more sense, I couldn't keep track. Poor woman - does
she ever get a word in?
Joe: Not very often, no.
Made me smile, anyway :)

Me too - with that and George finding a beetle, I thought one could see
a definite hint of self-reference in that episode.

Yes, but on the wider topic of Mildred in general: what's her function
to be in the plot, I wonder? Apart from the daft co-incidence it would
be if she turned out to be related to Matt, there's got to be some point
to her. In a way she sounds like a Marjorie Antrobus replacement; or is
she going to start a liaison with Joe? Or is she going to reveal
something about Ambridge's past that has been hidden all these years?
I think Joe had another lady-friend once, who temporarily enticed him
into church, but I forget how that ended.

If she isn't related to Matt, maybe she will remember his mother
handing over her child for adoption, and will be able to fill in the
gaps in Matt's background.
On this topic, does anyone else think that this storyline has been a
very poor representation of adoption? Surely anyone adopted as a baby
has only known their adoptive parents, and so they *are* their
parents. I don't understand all the stuff about Matt being on his own,
and having no family to help him. Most unfair to adoptive parents, if
you ask me. I know you didn't ask me, but when did that ever stop an
umrat?

I said to Mrs. McToodles that I felt it was probably an 'in joke'

Perhaps Mildred is going to reveal her time as a youth in Ambridge - do
you remember the un-named 'no better than she oughta be' who ran around
in very short skirts and the flimsyest of tops, distracted the country
bobby on his bike, ran a massage parlour for male clientele and had to
dissappear about the same time as some character with a name like
Lawson-Hope or somesuch ...
contd' on P 94 ...
