Been wondering the same thing myself.

That would stretch the long arm of coincidence rather too far - 
that his long-lost mum turns up just when Lilian has begun to 
get curious about his parentage.

OTOH this is TA, and the not-very-credible can and does happen, 
so you are quite possibly right.
