We had a simple foolproof method.
We had a lonely sock box - a temporary buffer.
Dry washing was dumped on our double bed. all sock pairs that could be
made were bundled together and put in the appropriate wearer's sock
draw.
Any socks without a partner were matched if possible with its partner
from the lost sock box.
All others were added to the lost sock box.

Result?

We have a large box full of odd socks.
