Hmm, still 113 unread posts to go and it's 1:44 a. m. - I'm _not_ going
to finish tonight! I'm resolutely leaving the expiry turned on, so posts
disappear from here 3 days after I get them whether I've read them or
not - but there are times, such as now, when I'll be dealing with
three-day-old posts only ...
On the DAB: the original (and still main) DAB band in the UK is roughly
the lower part of what was Band III, or "VHF hi" - about 200 MHz up a
bit. Most DAB sets sold in this country cover this band, which is also
used in other countries; some include other bands as well (one of the
microwave bands known as "L band" for example; this _is_ allocated to
DAB here, but I'm not sure if there are any broadcasts on it).
Also, there is a new variant - much better, as they always are - called
(depending on whom you read) DAB II, DAB+, or AAC, coming out, and some
countries are actually starting with it. (The original DAB standard used
mp2 compression, which is older and less efficient than the mp3 we know
from our players and downloads; AAC is better.) Of course, most original
DAB sets - and in fact most of those still being sold - aren't
compatible with the new standard.
for more details, dip into uk.tech.broadcast's archives - but only if
you have a strong will to live, as that will sap you ... (not with the
technical details, but the political arguments over which is better, why
we shouldn't have gone the way we have, ...)
