Actually I have now remembered something!  Log tables are actually
useful.  When I was at sea with Capt Ex they used them to work out the
position of the ship.  They took sights with the sextant (Hello,
BrritSki and I hope I spelled it right, if so I've learned it) and
those were figures they either looked up in log tables or they did a
calculation and then looked them up, or some combination of that.  I
never tried to understand it.  I did steer, common seaman was my level
:), not hofficer.
