Bibliophile Books
I have been a mail-order member of BB for many years but in the light of a
possible lengthy postal strike just before Christmas I decided it might be a
good idea to work on-line. (At least the order would get to them even if
delivery might be more problematic.)
When I started the registration process I was offered the usual drop-down
menu for style. "Mr" was the offered option but out of idle curiosity I
opened the menu to find a range of about two dozen styles, ranging from Air
Marshal through Canon, Dowager, The Princess and many more.
I hadn't realised what elevated company I was keeping in my search for cheap
books.
I noted that when they acknowledged receipt of my order all the prices were
in some currency denoted by a y with an acute accent on it. Any idea what
this might be, because I don't think the currency exchange in town here
deals with it.

The Yen symbol is like a Y with two horizontal bars just below the
centre. That doesn't sound like what you saw, which is used in Welsh to
indicate stress in a word, and (I discover) in Faroese, Icelandic and
Turkmen.

That's one of the symbols that comes up occasionally when your equipment
can't deal with the symbol it's supposed to be showing, for some reason.
It's probably a pound. But you'd probably already figured that out.

y-with-an-umlaut: 'ÿ' lives as character 255 (all ones in 8-bit binary) in
a number of character sets, so will pop up when something has gone
wrong.
There's another symbol, which looks like an o with four corners on it
'¤' (which, rather wittily, I get by typing compose-o-x) which systems
are supposed to use if they don't have the appropriate currency sign.

Or when writing about Eugène Ysaÿe, which is the only time I've ever seen it
used.

in my limited experience of japan, the yen abbreviation was a capital
y with its vertical stroke crossed with two horizontals.
