OT: Switchover probs
I've got a Thompson DTI 2300 STB and a (newer) Samsung DVDR with
built-in Freeview.

I did the obligatory re-set this morning on both and the DVDR is fine,
but the STB (after re-setting twice) says No Signal for both BBC1 and
BBC2.

As both are connected to the same aerial (communal thingy for all our
flats) and one works fine, I'm thinking this might mean that the STB is
too old to cope with what's going on.

Any techrat care to comment? Please and thank you.

This is no help whatsoever, but since the changeover BBC1, BBC2 and the
BBC 24-hour news have been either unobtainable or unwatchable since the
changeover here. I have spent a lot of money getting a booster for my
aerial, but this hasn't really helped. At the moment I am watching BBC
on analogue. I am told that my aerial, which is only two years old,
needs to be replace at yet more expense, or I should get a freesat box
(I have an unused Sky dish on the wall outside). I get my TV signal from
the Isle of Wight, and apparently they have moved the stations in some
way, and this is why I have the problem.

Having said all that, if one of your TVs is working fine, then your
problem seems to be with your receiver.

I had exactly the same problem with one of my STBs.
A trip to ASDA and £20 soon sorted it out.

Make sure you do an install from new if you have that option. Sometimes
fooling the stb into thinking it's brand new works. You do that by retuning
with no aerial connected, then reconnect the aerial and use the new
installation option. Good luck.

Thanks, Steve, that sort of worked! I did factory reset and install and
got reception on Channel 1, but AAAAGGGGHHHH! It's BBC Wales which I DO
NOT WANT with a vengeance.

However, a bit of recceing shows that I can get BBC Good Old North of
England by selecting channel 800-and-something.

Funnily enough, the DVDR has BBC North in the "proper places" at 1 and 2
and the Welsh stuff at about channel 190-something or something.
Luckily the Thompson STB is quite nifty with Favourites lists so I think
I'll be able to set it up so I can press 1 and 2 to the get the BBCs I
want. I still get Granada on 3 which would be a Good Thing except that
ITV have been putting out such crud programmes that I've hardly ever
watched it in the last year or so.

Hi,
As an inhabitant of Cumbria (as are other UMRATS) we have already been
subjected to this... We ended up with BBC (Scotland) on Ch 1 ... until
another retune a couple of days later fixed the (ahem.. C*ck-up at the
transmitter) problem...
They seemed to take a couple of goes at getting the various bits of the
signal in the "right order" .....
So another retune in a couple of days may be beneficial.... and never
does any harm to my mind....
HTH
Cheers,

(you're not allowed to unsemidelurk now!)

Even in London, with only one signal from Crystal Palace which is within
line of sight, it took three retunings to get all the channels in
reasonable places (ie not in the 800's, which are apparently Not Good
Places To Be).

A colleague tells me that CP has been running at reduced power on the BBC
DTT muxes this week.

Having managed to track down "proper" BBC1, I happened to have it on for
the local news at 6-ish (which is unusual for me) and they said tht
they'd been getting e-mails all day from people complaining about
getting Wales or Midlands when they used to have North West and wanted
it back.

We were told to do just what I had already done - tune in to the
high-numbered one and then fiddle with Channels and/or Favourites to get
it back to where it ought to be.

Still don't understand why the DVDR got BBC North West channels and put
them at 1 and 2 as usual, but not complaining!

It all has to do with the threshold for detecting an acceptable
signal, when there are two transmitters within range, which will
be different for each bit of hardware. I gather that there are
tricks involving temporarily inserting an attenuator during the
tuning process to help ignore the more distant transmitter.
