Indie - here today, Today tomorrow?
I have managed to keep apprised of the situation
as far as The Independent goes. They've offered
all their staffies redundancy--and on a length of
time basis. Under this, it has been reported, the
journalists who've been putting the paper into
circulation since its inception will be given two
years' pay to leave.

It's been quite a popular offer, I gather, so maybe
all those media studies graduates who were
promised jobs by the prospectus of their Uni'
are perhaps not bleating up the wrong tree after
all.

I'm just wondering whether this is something of
a machine that goes "ping", in that they'll all then
be rehired on contractors' rates or whether the
report that its Sunday edition now boasts a
grand total of one news reporter (as opposed
to columnists) is a sign that it's likely to follow
its one-time co-prospect "Today" onto the lists
of defunct titles.

As far as serious coverage goes I found it's a
bit too close to theguardian but without anything
like the job ads; it just means it's hardly worth
bothering buying for me, albeit I've been quite
impressed by some of the campaigning they've
tried.

It'd be a shame to see it go but I got the impression
it's no longer the paper it once was but nor is it
really the paper it wants to be.
